White Exhaust Wheel And Wastegate Flap - Why

Taken my chirpy RB20 16V Turbo off to replace it with a larger item but noticed something I have never ever seen before on turbos..

my exhaust wheel and around the waste gate flap and the flap it self is white! its allmost like bleeched clean white :S nothing else is this colour, the housing is all soooty black like normal.

any ideas? I dont think its running lean as dyno couple weeks back indicated rich figures.. i have replaced oxy sensor since the dyno and fuel economy has slightly improved but yeh never seen this before..

na ceramic, no dont use fuel additives.

was the car using any water ? anti freeze in the exhaust manifold produces really clean white smoke .

ran avgas on my old rb20 for a few months, turned the rear of the turbo and exhaust a white colour lol

what sort of fuel do you run?

have you been losing coolant at all?

95 Fuel, coolants been fine, its been chirping on boost tho

check for play then. it may be that the white stuff is ceramic dust.

and you should look at running 98

yeh its got up and down play as well as side to side LOL not terrible but not good

im changing the turbo today anyway but was a bit worried when i saw what i saw

i can afford to run 95 atm, its relativly stock but I know once i put the nistune on it I will need to go 98, my last 32 used to ping on anything but 98

Its supposed to have some free play (more than you may imagine) - you're not going to know if its a problem unless you measure it and check the specs.

My experience with ceramic turbine is that its black.

The so called "knock" map on std nissan ECUs is also known as the "regular" map, is for regular (not premium) fuel. I *think* its designed to work on 95.
