Hey guys,

as the topic states, need some practical advice. Well here goes

Have an R32 GTR, have upgraded most of the car to suit club racing. only things to do on my wish list is suspension, rear brakes and rollcage/seam welding. Im guessing i can get the suspension done for say 5g, which includes the adjustable arms and all new nolathane bushes etc, rear brakes, 2g and i can prob get rollcage done for 2.5g as my father is a panel beater/spray painter so we can paint it ourselves.

Am 10g in debt due to the car lol, am quickly paying that off though.

Recently bought a wrecked 32 GTR for the motor, put the motor in my car and lost oil pressure after a few hours, but have already got nearly all the bits to build a brand new engine, including prepped block(cleaned, bored and decked), brand new 33 crank, venolia pistons, ARP head, main and rod bolts/studs, N1 water pump, all new nissan bearings and gasket kit, near new head with all stainless valves, rebuilt HKS 2530's, sump baffle and oil restrictor, all i require now is assembly and a decent oil pump.

Over the last couple years have spent a great deal of money on the car and i am almost to the point of insanity and wonder what i should do now?

Couple options,

1) Sell car with no motor and then rebuild the motor that has lost oil pressure and sell that too , along with all of my other bits and pieces, then use all of the money to pay off my debts and put deposit on a house and hope that in say 10 years or so i will have enough money behind me to get into club racing again(if i bust my arse working and saving that is lol)

2) Sell off all the bits i dont need for my decent engine build and then put that motor into my car and enjoy the car the way it is (til it blows up again lol)

3) Bite the bullet, get out more money from the bank and get everything done at once and that way i only have to freshen engine up every year or so and repair any damage i do if i happen to go off road lol

4) Pay off loan and see how i feel then(should be before xmas)

5) Go around every business i can and beg for a few bob hoping i can get enough to get the car to where i wantand still enable me to pay off loan

Only a few points of consideration.

1) Girlfriend who is pretty keen to move out of my parents place and buy a place together

2) Economic crisis(if i get a huge loan and my work goes under, what do i do for coin then)

3) If i do sell off everything i will be a miserable prick for at least 2 months and will cringe/cry everytime i see another 32GTR getting around the streets/track

4) But, if i do sell off everything and bust my arse for the next 10 years i could probably buy a 34GTR and club race that(can i wait that long though?)

Any advice/comments/money donations lol would be greatly appreciated

Regards,

Michael

G'day Micheal,

My two cents worth, you've had a bit of fun over the last couple of years with your car. Sell it all and get a house with the love of your life. As much as we all love Skylines, a roof over you head is more important. Work hard and get into it again in a couple of years.

Set yourself up first. :) I hate to say how much I wasted on cars when I was a youngen!

Wogboy.

Hi michael

I do agree with wogboy.

I was very lucky to have a great wife who let me race for 11 years, but please take into account the vechile was datsun 1600 with the good old l series engine[a very reliable donk]set of side draughts maybe a cam and off i went racing.it cost me brake pads, clutches and tyres and i would give the old girl a engine freshen up every 2 years and that little car would sing it's head off all day.

Today it is alot different with gtr etc big bucks to set up and make go and when they brake more big bucks, the biggest problem is the availability of well priced parts ,so what happens is while the engine is in bit i will replace not just the broken parts we tend to buy better and more exspencive parts.

I am talking from exsperiance my engine rebuild started at 3-4 grand then 3 weeks later became 6-9 grand and blew out to 11-12 grand what a great wife i have.

The one thing i have now relised my entire 11 years or club race revolved around the car and i worked every week end to support my hobby, wife and children, the racing involved both my girls as they grew up but i missed alot of ther growing up because of it and that also ment my wife picked all the pieces.

In short you should do what feels right for you and others around you.

Also thanks for the parts today,i had a great drive to and from your place [no wildlife ]

stuart

Thanks for the advice guys, Wogboy i didnt realise you had such a sensitive side, did your wife make you write that ha ha ha, but i do agree with you about starting my life with the girl of my dreams and im guessing that in a few years(maybe more if i have children lol) i can get back into it.

Stuart, you have got some good points too, especially spending so much money on cars, i have a mate of about 45 years old who always tells me how much he has wasted on cars/bikes during his younger years, he reckons about 150grand(thats an average house in sheffield lol), he wrote a lot of them off though, cant drive as good as we can lol

I do love it to bits but as they say, all good things come to an end, sooner or later, and i think the time has come to say goodbye, oh yes it will be sad, there will be tears shed and sleepless nights and angry outbursts(i wonder if you can get GTR patchs to help with the withdrawel symptoms lol) but i will get over it one day.

Ben, hmmm, i do agree with you too, but if i keep it, i will keep spending more and more money on it(once you get the bug you cant stop lol)

So i guess it is time to start pricing some stuff up and post a new thread with WTS.

Thanks guys

LOL! Nah she wasn't. But if you show a bit of initiative in the early years it's amazing what they will let you do in the later years. :)

    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
