I found something very scary on the inside of the right rear tyre today:

lucky i just happened to be looking under the car- it was not making any funny sounds or any other warning that it could have let go at any moment!!! The tear had gone almost right around the tyre- 4-5 inches before it could have been very bad ending (especially if doing 110kms/hour)... Looks to have slighly damaged the rim too, but that will be an easy fix i imagine

But i look on the brightside- whilst the tyre is being replaced i can look even more pimpin :(

looks like there's a screw in the tyre in the first pic so i'd say low pressure+the mad camber wear! which i say would be from towing heavy car trailers... that's the kind of thing that would make it split like that as opposed to just bursting.

btw, they look like a maxxis MA-V1 or an early pattern sumitomo HTR, for those of you playing at home

dont be fooled this happened to both my rear tyres and they blew out at 110 km/h both 50m apart Lucky i was i the middle of moving house and had my stockies in the back of the car. I still dont know what caused it and i could not find any polish marks in the wheel arch when they did my breaks even the guys at brakes plus said they could not find any point of contact. i had 19's on and @ $350 a tyre i thought to hell with that and put my stockies back on. havn't had any issues with it since. :P

One idea i did have is that when doing hi-way travle and you hit a sag or dip in the road "maybe" the top part of your rear shock grazes the tyre. but again i cannot be sure. as i couldnt find any rubber under the wheel arch.

pretty sure i had the same tyres as you "falkens" and i think mine were 245/??-R19

I will take some picks when i get home and show you its exactly the same thing.

Yeah I had the same issues as well with my last set of tyres...I had Falkens on mine...but the tyres had about 75% tread when I brought the car last year.

I'm guess it's comes down to tread wear. Doesn't AWD skylines/stageas have a issue with inside tread wear?? (damn...which reminds me, I need to change those blasted castor arm bushes again)

my bad, should have quoted post above yours

brand doesn't really make a difference with this kind of thing anyway, i've seen it with just about every brand

well spotted- nail in tyre which caused slow leak- driving on deflated tyres for to long= fudged tyre...

Pictures as promised, i dunno about you guys but that dont look like any normal Stagea issue ware of a tyre. any way it may not be related, but it could be an issue? The damage is way worse then the OP's but i guess i wasn't lucky enough to find it before they blew.

Or it could be the Commode problem of when heavily loaded the tyre comes into intimate contact with the rear suspension...

Knew someone with a VY Ute who put on new tyres before relocating to Melbourne. Put his entire life in the rear tray, and by the time he got to Mel had worn parts of the tyre down to the canvas...

All right.... Past two days my mum has borrowed the stag for carting some stuff to and from houses (shes an interior decerator or whatever).... Ive always been hesitant about lending it to her after I got new wheels.... anyway today phone rings about an hour after she took if from home and she doesnt usually call me during the day, expecting turbo timer questions ect she says Im very sorry but ive damaged the car. So shes rashed the f**k out of the front left wheel doing a U turn. Shes all good and going to help pay for it but man its a real PITA!!!

At least this wheel wasnt one of the mint un rashed ones ..
