ok ive done a search and while everyone has problems with shaky steering at 110 +, i dont have that until i get to 120 (not that i should be doing this hence why i havent fixed it) but my steering shakes violently while turning, softly between 60-70 (theres a sound like something rattling loudly coming from the drivers side, then violently between 70 - 110, now it only happens when im turning to the left (highways) but going towards the right its smooth as silk.

anyone care to point me in the wrong direction so some workshop doesnt spend my savings by guessing whats wrong?

thanks all

Hey mate,

That sounds like your driver's side front tyre may have flat spot. If you have a flat spot on one side when you turn you usually notice it way more, also gets worse with speed. Its one thing you should rule out anyhow, so have a very good look at the tyre. Flat spot will usually be towards the inside due to neg camber.

Yes still have hicas, should I block it out?

I wouldn't lockbar it down and block the lines till I was sure it was HICAS at fault. Usually the HICAS light would light up if there was an issue (then you would run the HICAS self-diagnostic). Put the ECU into self-diagnosis mode and check for error codes.

Also check your powersteering fluid level (since R32's HICAS runs off it, R33's and nweer are electric-based not hydralic-based)

I've got a r33 but power steering fluid is perfect as well, but how can I explain the rattling sound and this only happens on left turns as well, but even at 50/60/70 it's loud enough to hear through the exhaust noise

Ok just for future reference to anyone that has the same symptoms, the problem was actually a drivers side tie rod end, problem fixed by installing a rose jointed item (although a pedders one would have been ok) I figured the rose jointed items would last longer. I also replaced both the front ones to prevent future problems. Cost came to $149 for both not including installation which will be done within the next week.

Apparently it can also help with bump steering so i'll see how it goes!

Thanks for all the input though.

    • I'll tell her I put in a new air filter on it, which, it would have anyway with the ITB's In the end she isn't to fussed, she spends lots of money on hair, nails, make-up and all the other "required" beauty products that women use, plus I grease the wheels with shiny gifts and holidays wherever and whenever I can She once questioned my car spending "budget", but after itemising everything she spends on herself, and what I spend on her, and the fact that I don't care if she does or doesn't wear make-up and fancy pants perfume, or requires new outfits for every wedding, funeral or anything else she deems worthy, and I'm quite happy to go "real" camping, instead of staying in hotels or jaunts on cruise ships, she decided not to press the subject on how I spend funds, and has never asked "how much did that cost" again, so a win to me And how often can you say you really get a win with the fairer sex? She is a good woman, and in the big picture, I'm really lucky.....that she hasn't killed me yet
    • What will you do when the Minister of War and Finance says the intake noises are too loud?
    • Will the clear coat dissolve the ink tho?? I thought about clear vinyl tape too. Thinking what to do haha. The one I have now is cracked in 1 spot, otherwise mint. Plus the MINES one is much thicker plastic material so its not flimsy at all.
    • No. Go a different colour, and just trim it at an edge line. Even manufacturers do different panels different colours etc.
    • I see no real downsides to ITB's, apart from the initial cost of my drive in drive out lifestyle, the "upsides" is they sound cool and would add lots of smiles I am willing to pay to play for the extra smiles I've spent the morning googling and youtubing the BBR ITB's, a "little" extra power and throttle response, but alot more dort, and really, I'm only really in it for the dort Who knows, after all this money is spent I might even make 150kwatw....LOL
