I recently bought a R34 GTR Vspec, realised there is an issue with the performance of the engine. If anyone could offer some advise on what is the issue that will be great.

The car is completely stock standard, no problems starting the engine but the car idles at 1,300-1,500rpm consistently

when i step on the gas the car seems to jerk a bit before running smooth

on the highway i am not able to hold the speed whether 60/70 or 80 for example. if i try and hold the speed at 60 the speed drops and when i give it gas it jerks or hesitates before going again.

And the car seems to be pretty sluggish, not as quick as i would have expected.

if anyone could advise me on whats wrong, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much

Regards

Andy

Hey congrats on the purchse!

as for the jerking, i would suggest a process of elimination: grab some AFM cleaner for your twins, swap the spark plugs to some good ones, check the coilpacks for cracks, search for vacumn leaks in the cooler/turbo pipe

easy things to check but may fix the problem as ive had similar issues with previous cars and those specific parts.

thanks for that, much appreciated. i have also spoken to xspeed in perth, and they had told me it is most likely the coil packs as it is supposedly a common problem for skylines.

will be bringing my car down there this week for a full check up, thanks again.

Idle is too high, IMO. That indicates air leak (likely some bozo cleaned the throttle bodies).

Have you checked the base timing? Although that might be difficult if you can't control the idle speed.

  • 5 weeks later...

Im leaning towards afm's. Give them a spray out and try again. Should idle around 900rpm with the aircon off, unless someone has bee dicking around with the iac valve.

Have you put your right foot down? If so, how is it, does it rev cleanly to 6000 or is it dropping cylinders? Blowing black smoke?
