I personally leave my cans :ninja: in neutral. The only time I leave it in gear is on a steep incline, and that's once in a blue moon.

So the can does not roll down the hill.... haha

When I drive a manual car - i've been told to always leave it in 3rd gear or higher, never knew the real reason for 3rd specifically... but I'm *guessing* if you leave it in first or second and you accidentally crank the engine in gear you could possibly cause the car to literally start moving.

in an auto car - I always put it in park when the car is parked.

I think the majority would leave it in Neutral, as most would have a turbo timer installed (on this site). but when i drive a car without i would leave it in reverse as i have heard its the strongest gear.

When i was learning to drive many moons ago, like 30 years i was told to park in first gear in a manual and park in auto, don't know if it's right but it's worked for me so far. :ninja:

Probably what some dumbass's logic was, for leaving it in a high gear. You will definitely move if you crank it in a low gear.

The reason for parking it in a low gear ie 1st gear is that 1st provides the greatest resistance to moving. 4th gear will roll freely, 1st will stop a car.

If you're on a really steep hill then reverse is normally a bit shorter still so use it instead.

Personally I always park on flat ground so I leave it in neutral. If I park it on a steep driveway then I leave it in gear.

Always park with gearbox in 1st, handbrake ON (obviously), even if it's auto. Sometimes put it in reverse if parked downhill, but usually 1st.

most autos wont let you take the key out unless its in park

I live down a steep hill and park my cars on the street, i always parked with 1st gear in and it has saved me many times.

I once went to drive to work one morning and obviously didnt pull the handbrake up tight enough jumped in pushed the clutch in and the car started to roll down, HOLY COW 1st gear managed to hold 1.5 ton of car all night from rolling down the hill into one of my neighbours lounge room.

For me now its habit living down a steep hill for the last 20 years and many times this has been the case where the gear saves a handbrake in need of tensioning etc etc.
