hi guys,

i have been advised to run my rips sump on its own & not worry about fitting my oil cooler kit for the reason that my engine will hold close to 8ltr of oil on its own...increasing my oil capacity with the oil cooler may give me issues with achieving the right oil temp @ 75-80degrees.

does anyone here have 'low oil temp issues' running a large sump inline with an oil cooler?

marko get a thermostat for the oil cooler i found one last night from the same company that your oil coolers is from.

exactly - any quality kit will have a thermostat in it.

also, depending on use, 8l will get plenty hot enough so I would be concerned about whoever gave you that advice (unless they are going to warrant your engine against failure due to oil breakdown if it gets hot)

It'll be a small cylinder in the sandwich plate or oil filter mount with a spring that opens at the right temp. easy to spot, ones without thermostats are a simple filter mount with inlet and outlets

i want to clean out my lines & cooler, what is the best way to do this as i want to make sure there are no fragments in the kit from the last engine damage? highly unlikely but want to be sure.

i would have thought kerosene & water?

When I cleaned mine out (2nd hand), I filled it with about half a can of degreaser, blocked the 2 holes with my thumbs and shook it violently for about 5 minutes, then pointed my high pressure water sprayer in one end and all the oil was spraying like a fountain out the other. Did the same again but with WD40, then again with carby cleaner. Then just turned it upsidedown overnight so whatever was still in there drained out

to be honest if an engine has let go in a big way i bin the oil cooler if its a cheapie..... :down: if its a decent cooler i get my machinist to flush it and hot tank it..... depends on what your engines worth i supose.

totally agreed. if your old motor spun a bearing chuck the oil cooler out. there are just too many little places for bits of bearing to lodger to bother over $200. While you are throwing things out replace the little oil to water cooler where the filter mounts as well.

+1 for binning the oil cooler if you have had an engine failure regardless of wether it is a cheapie or a good quality cooler I personally would never run a cooler that has had bearing material thru it.

I believe that you have stated in another post that you have spent big$ on your engine build so dont risk it for the price of a cooler or you could very well be spending more.

As far as the oil goes as duncan stated 8lt will get plenty hot enough so definatly run with the oil cooler. My car runs a dry sump set up and holds 12lt in the tank + lines and cooler so would be around 15lt all up and has no problem getting up to temp i run the oil cooler in the radiator end tank so gets everything up to temp reasonably quick and hold the temp at a very stable level.
