Its my R33's first service (in Australia that is) and I've done a bit of ringing around for pricing, and for a simple oil change I've had quotes ranging between $80 and $270.

Obviously the type of oil that is used is going to affect the cost but the discrepancy is a bit large just to put it down to the type of oil surely.

Any advice on a reasonable price for a decent brand of oil?

the last change i did which was last week i used mobile 1 .. that new one ... and i'm actually impressed as it holds oil pressure well and the engine sounds good too ... nice and quiet .. smooth idle etc ... but my cars always been like that i guess ... but yeah that was 59 bucks ... but i just wanted to try it ... before this i've used castrol gtxt (thats what the mechanic said , can't find info on it though) and i've used penzoil ... both were good too and had no problems .. both costed about 50 bucks too ... thats what u're lookin at just for the price of oil ... filter is 10 bucks ... so if a guy charges 80 bucks for a service ... unless he uses really shit oil or he gets it in bulk cheap ... he aint making alot of money ...

from hours of reading up and tech data...a resonably priced oil would be Motul 8100 5w-40w about $55 bucks plus a new oil filter maybe $10-$15 depends where u get it from and labour $free if u do it yourself. oh and maybe an oil pan about $5 it will come in handy in the future.

Mobil one is over priced for what it is advertising does cost money and they have to get that back in more than one way.

Check the search button too there have been heaps of thread on what oils to use etc.

If u wanna spend more on oil u can go for RedLine Oils Will set u back about $130 or so bucks :P i have also used/currently running Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40w does the job well from what i can tell. About $45 bucks, remember u should also do oil changes every 5000km so money will stack up if u do alot of km in your car.

For 250 they should be using a synthetic oil and checking all the plugs, wheel bearings, gearbox oil level, coolant condition and level and a whole bunch of other shit that gets listed.

And a new sump plug o-ring! :P

That price is what a standard service from one of the big car companies costs using synthetic oil. They give a list of the shit thats been done and you can garantee they don't do it all. No way they check the plugs in an RB20-25, theres too much shit in the way.

akeenan is spot on

Doing your own is sht ezy. Remember that this should be done every 5000km or so. You can then pick your own good quality oil and filter and make sure it is done properly. No rip offs here.

I do mine every 5000 with Penrite 10-50 semi and a new filter every time. Runs sweet and you know what you are getting.

Enjoy

for $250 they should change the oil/filter/sparkplugs..

for $250 dollars id expect they do eveything check everything

replace all fluids, check plugs, leads, all tyres rotate, pads if nec etc check for any leaks check all suspension, buches etc everything..

but im a little biased because i used to work as a mechanic... id also expect wheels balanced ......everything, but all that woulndt get done

As long as you can tell me of a good way to get rid of the old oil, I would be interested in 20L drums :) I guess all you'd need is another empty 20L drum to pour the old stuff into? Then chuck it out when it's full.
