have just put a 45v1 turbo on my RB20 with a new steel bell mouth dump pipe i can hear a rattle through the dump pipe at idle, is it possible for the waste gate flap to make this noise?

when i purchased this turbo with no pressure from the actuator i could still spin the wheel even though it was closed, do you think this is where my rattle is coming from?

spools up fine, just when you wrap the throttle, you get like a rattle wind down.

anyone had this problem/ suggestions how to fix or force the waste gate flap to close further

Yeah, have seen this problem a couple of times. Best way is to replace the actuator. If you are intent on keeping the actuator, you can elongate the mounting holes to allow more tension to be applied but that's a cheap temporary fix.

The best way to check the tension is on the flapper is to remove the circlip or e-clip holding the rod to the arm, pull the rod off the arm and hold the arm shut. Position the rod over the arm and you should have to pull the rod between 3-4mm to get it over the arm pin. If it just slides over easily without having to pull on it, it could have lost tension.

if you think the wastegate is causing this noise, you could try and buy a spring and add a little more pre-load to the wastegate flap. Don't add too much as it will cause the car to run more boost. Use this just to test if it is causing the issue.

If you find the noise goes away then you might want to leave the spring there if its still running safe boost levels or replace the actuator.

The turbo wheel will still spin if the wastegate is opened or close.

thanks for the help guys.. well i was able to move the wastegate flap up and down on the shaft so that straight away kinda says its not pulling back against the flap

i wacked a large flat head screwdriver between the compressor housing outlet and the rod to the flap and bent it til it was pulling on it tight.. problem solved :)

cheers
