hey guys,

i just had my car remapped yesterday using an RB20DE ecu out of an A31 cefiro.

the car feels a little more powerful now (mild mods: exhaust, fmic, turbotech boost) and was just shy of 200kws on the dyno.

a few issues have come up though,

1. when i start my car 2 out of 3 times it will start and then die down and stall.

2. it idles quite high around 1500 rpm cold start, 1000 when warm

3. strangely when i put it into any gear when stationary the revs will increase a few hundred rpm.

4. the exhaust temp/cat light flashes randomly while driving

any advice, opinions or theories will be well appreciated :)

if your car is an r33 as in your sig, you will have lost VCT.

also if your cat light on the dash is flashing it means the map on the eprom is either wrong or it is not seated in the ecu properly. take it back to whoever did it immediately :)

you could be doing your car damage...

also ask them what they have done with VCT.

some advice as most of your replay are pretty short and not very helpful...

you can remap rb25 ecu's but due to the chips needed they are more expensive and not many people do them. Toshi from these forums does and his reputation is very good.

alternatively, you can use nistune. very good and there is lots of tuner support and you will get good results, this is the best software out there for remapping ecu's.

you can run the following ecu's

rb25

rb20 - any variety, but you will not be able to control VCT. this is not really a problem but if you can its good to be able to control it

VG30 - can be rewired and remapped to run an rb25, you retain VCT control and its just as easy to remap as an rb20 ecu.

it sounds like whoever did it for you has done a bot of a dodgy job and you need to talk to them and get it sorted out. you can run an RB25 on an r32 ecu with no problems, mine makes 311rwkw on a remapped r32 ecu.

its all in the tune,

also if the socket has been soldered in your ecu incorrectly or without precision you can lift a track or join 2 with solder. if this is done the car will obviously not run properly and you will have symptoms described earlier.

so get it checked out by who tuned it first and if you get no joy, pm me and i will see if i can help.

Cheers!

Nistune dont do R33;

"We are thinknig about doing a board for R33 RB25DE/RB25DET but it involves a fair amount of work, and the parts to interface with the existing 84 pin MCU on this ECU. It is a very difficult board to get started on and requires whole new firmware code to be implemented, whilst supporting customers with our existing product line. I will start drafting schematics once Type 5 has been finished and we have got the knock sensing functionality working.

If you are looking for something to get these going then we suggest either using a HCR32 Skyline or Z32 300ZX ECU with a Type 2 board. See our FAQ topics for more information regarding these ECUs.

Your other option, if you really want to use the R33 ECU is to use an emulator with an expensive third party daughter board (pictured above) available from Sam at www.drdrift.com.au"

exactly.... and the process is alot dearer hence my reluctance to bother with R33 remapping.

i just recomend a EMU, PFC or LINK etc for R33. If you are dead set on a R33 REMAP then the two most reputable are DRDRIFT or Toshi.

I have a remapped 33 computer. Runs same actual "chip" as rb20det and ca18det, Runs different board that nistune wont talk to.

NRE works on it tho. It is a factory r33 RB25det computer and retains VCT, none of this other garble. (chips are identical to other chips...its the boards that are different. Although I have seen the bigger single burn chiped 25 ecus as well)

Dr did mine LOL, Dr wont be touching mine again.

Alternatively, Hanna @ Best1tuning in the us supply the rb25det boards...now if only another co would develop software to program me I might not be stuck in tuning hell.

Its up for sale, needs a couple of hours dyno time (its running someones elses map with tr43 and bigger injectors) so not suited to std shit.

Pm me with offers....

I need a real computer. :P

    • I dunno man, that VX S with 200,000 k's is still hanging out for 1.5 I reckon the R34 is the better buy, personally.

    • Only in a market where OBD was a thing. The rest of the world was quite happy to let the US EPA only affect US cars for quite a while. The* problem with datalogs is that unless you are very familiar with what every trace should look like, on their own and as an ensemble, you can and will see weird shit that can and will lead you astray, not realising that what you are seeing is the normal consequence of various transient inputs. *Really, "a" problem, as there are of course many other problems too. Look, these cars are so bloody simple that if it is missing or stumbling, the obvious thing is to break out the old mental diagnostic list and just go do all the things that you know you should. After proving that the plugs are clean and sound, ditto the coil stalks, coils, loom connectors, etc, and then making sure that there is fuel pressure at about the right numbers (while driving!, not while sitting in the garage free blipping it), then maybe you go looking at AFM voltages, manually testing the igniter, putting a scope on the CAS, etc. Then you're into pulling the injectors for a spray pattern look-see and perhaps a clean, squirting carby cleaner around the inlet manifold looking for leaks, and all the more annoying and esoteric, but still common as muck faults that these things have. I wouldn't ever bother looking at the trims, as they are usually bullshit on these old clunkers anyway.
