As Pete said, when there is another dyno day, it'll be bigger and better. You concerns are noted and taken on board guys. Even the SAU:SA committee members were busy on their feet all day. Its a learning experience for us all ... and still at the end of the day I thoroughly enjoyed it.

+1, there is a sacrifice to be made when fitting in so many cars within a limited amount of time. If I recall correctly, the people at Autosalon last year didn't run AF ratios either - theyre mostly important for when tuning. a simple dyno day assumes that you have your engine tuned properly (because the person who runs the dyno isnt getting paid to do a tune, so they dont).

Basically, if you dont think your car is able to hack a power run with load on a dyno, then dont bother turning up. This is my humble opinion. The onus is on you to have a competent and capable vehicle which can survive a dyno shootout.

A dyno shootout is just that. A numbers run. It is not a tune. it is not an opportunity for people with bad tunes to diagnose their woes on the cheap.

That said, I think it'd be best to adopt a policy of safety rather than speed. I for one wouldn't be happy if I munted my engine so the tuner could save 30 minutes. No doubt Southern Hitech can do this, its just you'd probably only have 20 cars on a single day, rather than 30. Just keep in mind that nothing is for free - it actually costs a bit of money to run a dyno for a day, people don't realize this.

I'm really smegged off I missed it. Car is in the mechanics atm to get injectors replaced. If the others test poorly then I'll go and upgrade to 555's at min, 700's at max.

i dont think cara will be swayed from john keen.

It shouldn't matter as she is representing SAU-SA. There should have been either a number of workshop approached to see which one can give the best deal to the club or EOI gone out to workshops to see what they can offer and then from this info a workshop is voted on by the committee. It shouldn't be which ever workshop an individual committee member has an affiliation with gets the job, otherwise there is no point having a committee

very well said.

Having said that though, it takes all of 10 seconds to put the sniffer in the exhaust. The main delay is waiting for the sensor to heat up but since they cars are going back to back it won't cool down too much and if he's holding them on high revs like people have been stating it'll be hot enough to give a reading by the time he starts the power run.

I'm pretty sure that at the last pulsar dyno day at boostworx that there was no AFR's logged.

I had a 10mm hole in my in my intercooler piping where a plug had worked it's way out which resulted in Mega rich AFR's (Like <9.0:1) and there was no AFR readings produced. If i had have known i would have pulled the car off after the first run.

At the end of the day it's up to the contestant to make sure that their car is in correct running order. They aren't tuning that car all they are doing is what you are aking them to do; run the car up on the dyno to see what power it's making in it's "current" state of tune. It's not their fault of your cars not running right because all they in effect doing what most people occasionally do on the street or that same as climbing up a steep hill. When you do this you don't know what your AFR's are so you take the risk, same case here.

You've got your dyno events mixed up Dale, the Pulsar dyno day was at GWW and they do check AFM's there as well as boost pressure. I have my printout from both years.

thats pretty harsh

considering that this is an inaugral event for a newly formed group, i really would have loved to see others do it better

if a business offers to help SAU, dont you think it would be wise to accept the goodwill and go with it, rather than say 'oh, well we need assurances you actually know what you're doing..."

And this is from a well respected institution. SAU:SA wont win any friends by making workshops try to out bid each other on freebies for the simple goal of keeping you all happy...

if you guys out there, reckon that you can do it better, then by all means, petition business and present them to the offically nominated SAUSA events co-ordinator so that she can weigh up all >AVAILABLE< options. By available, I dont mean the hypothetical.

It's not harsh at all it's what being part of a committee is all about, decisions being made by a group of the good of the group or a common goal.

That is the job of the event coordinator to gather the info and produce it to the committee.

Which ever one that was at BW then, the one where there was a big power supra that took the day out and there were a couple tough Ford coupes there as well.

EDIT!!

Found it it was this one;

Domestic Vs Import Dyno Day: 22nd Nov

Not that it matters :D

I agree to a point but whats to say your car pulls fine the first run, then all of a sudden your pump decides to die as it starts to pull on the second run......

I dont know about you but i would prefer the dyno operator to have the option of pulling out when the AFR's head skyward rather than not knowing.

Just a bit of insurance and lets face it's not hard to put the probe in there.

As Ruby said this was the first SAU-SA DD and was a success well done to everyone involved.

I'd also like to add that GWW dyno'd 39 cars in one day for the Pulsar day and checked the AFM's and boost pressure for every single car.

http://www.dynoday.info/results2009.html GWW get my vote for the next dyno day :D

Cool. Maybe you can ask them on behalf of SAU Chad?

Its nice to second guess events with the benefit of hindsight, but I'd note that I never saw any alternative suggestions before the event was held.

Also, regarding the inference that the SAU committee has to vote against everything ; I believe the current arrangement is to leave all functional arrangements to the discretion of the events coordinator, because quite simply, that is what their job is. I'm sure the secretary and treasurer have more than enough stuff to worry about than to have to approve or vote against something that has little or no relevance to their position within this non profit organisation, and I surely don't believe the president wants to micro manage every aspect of the org.

Just a quick note to put entrants mind at ease.

The ramp rate on the dyno was set to shoot-out mode.

I'm betting 90% of entrants give your cars the odd squirt on the road which would load your engines more than the rollers would especially with a slight incline in the road.

Many of you even do hills runs.........do you know how much brake you need on the rollers to simulate the same scenario??

A knock reading of say 60 under these road conditions would've barely registered on the rollers.

Having said that, I understand the concern for those that entered and like I said before, if I have anything to do with another Dyno Day (irrespective of where it's held), the subject of AFR's will definitely be addressed.

:( Pete :D

Dont want the likes of Adrian, Chad and co not bringing their big power beasts for something thats so easy to rectify. Lets face it everyone wants to see the 300+ kw cars on the rollers.....The sound of a big power RB is music to the ears.

This is wrong for a few different reasons.

Firstly the major thing that restricts the growth of a new club is it's finances, if you can get a better deal from a workshop and it makes more money for the club then the better.

And secondly there is nothing more important to a club (especially a fledgling club) than it's events, a club lives and dies by it's events. If the event aren't up to scratch (and i'm not saying this one wasn't) then they won't get new members or even lose the ones it has. Given the importance of event in the clubs future it is definitely some thing that the committee as a whole should be deciding with the events coordinator doing the leg work. If the other committee members don;t have time to put towards an aspect that is so vital to the clubs well being then they should have accepted their nomination to the position (although I'm sure that's not the case here).

Anyhow this is getting off of track and by the sounds of it it was i very successful day, i'm just saying that important decisions that greatly affect the club shouldn't be left up to one person.

I'm out.

Some interesting reactions, personally I knew, provided nothing was touched under the hood, that my afr's were fine, I did have an issue at the GW dyno day with my engine leaning out due to a rather sloppy hose being fitted to the fpr that blew off 3 times :D causing a major lean out.

As for the way the engine was run up and free revving for too long I was more worried about heat robbing power :(

Anyhoo lets not loose sight that it was a great day had by all and any future events can only get better.

im in agreeance with the AFR thingy....the dyno day i held at classic performance, you sat in the car with Ashley and he told you were the car was going right and wrong and what can be done about it...he spent the time with each competitor....pity there was only 8 cars that ran on the dyno after a heap of people pulled out.....but with all things said, this was our inagural event and as such it was a learning experience...we know what things we need to do to make it better for next time...even though i had a great day and met new people.....was alot different to some of the other club outings...where i was basically the oldest guy there

During our committee meetings, several dyno workshops were considered. We were concerned with some aspects, such as the steep access to BW and the main road location of GWW as some examples. SHT seemed the suitable option. This was thoroughly discussed at our Committee meetings, and John was approached. Its got nothing to do with the fact that Cara takes her car to SHT. One aim of SAU:SA also is to help out small businesses where we can. We held one of our fundraiser BBQs at Ministry of Bass (helping the smaller business) ... yet no one complained about why didn't we have it at Tonkins etc. You can't keep everyone happy all the time, so a selection was made for what we considered was the best for the majority. SHT's workshop has easy access for any lowered car, and no neighbours to complain about noise, and should it have been raining there was heaps of undercover space. The premises was very accommodating ... pity about the annoying wind. We were thinking of you as entrants and spectators when we selected SHT. As mentioned before, your concerns will be taken on board. They are all valid points. This will set the benchmark for the next event we run. We will only get bigger and better :D

Anyhoo lets not loose sight that it was a great day had by all and any future events can only get better.

    • Pre-empting heat management  1. The Kraken manifold will be ceramic coated 2. Just purchased some peel and stick heat shielding stuff from car builders, I'll cover some of the firewall behind the dump and a little on the cam cover, this will be done prior to installation as I have ample room to get where I need to now before that realestate has more bits in the way, I'm also planning to modify the OEM heat shield to go back on, but that won't happen until after installation so I know where to hack it up, I'll also cover it with some some peel and stick to neaten it up after the hacking 3. As the dump is stainless with a flex joint coating isn't really a option, and wrapping isn't recommended for a stainless dump, so once it is installed I'll grab some shielding from car builders to cover the dump, as it has some stand off, it "shouldn't" cause any issues and it "should" just keep the radiant heat away from " melty engine bay stuff" Not for heat management, but I've grabbed some more black crinkle coat to paint all the shiny intake pipes, I'll pick the pipe work up prior to installation and use the paint booth and big oven at work to cure them, I'll then wrap them with some bubble wrap so they stay nice during installation

    • YO- have been searching and searching for an a31 chassis plug pinout, or someone who knows which wire is for tach.  ceffy was flooded past dash during a hurricane.  having an electrical gremlin appear. tach is wonky reading consistent with a short, and on occasion the right side of my speedo lighting will flicker just for a second then go back to normal.  if no pinout available does anyone know if the tach harness opens or branches anywhere behind the dash? im suspecting a possible root behind the radio as there are more shorts in that area on the accessory loop.
