Hey people,

I have an R33 GTS-t manual S1 Skyline. Is it worthwhile persuing change of the gearbox from series 1 to series 2 or both gearboxes absolutly the same? Someone told me that series 2 gearbox has a different gears ratio. Can anyone confirm that?

Cheers,

Eugen

hmmm anybody else opinions? anybody has speck sheets for series 1 and series 2 ECR33 skylines?

Gear ratio exactly the same... Only thing i know for sure (from first hand experience) is that you can't get spare parts for series 1 gearboxes. For example i wanted to change 1st-2nd synchro. Called nissan and due to a supersession i needed to replace all synchro's, selector and a long list of other things... Trade price quote came to $2600... In short the series 1 is fine as long as nothing goes wrong in it...

Thanks guys, so there are a better gearbox but not much point upgrading until mine fails completly. I leave it alone for now! Sky, any ideea how much u suppose to pay for a good quality second hand gearbox series 2? Anyhow if the parts are different inside and do not fit from one to another means they are somehow different. RIGHT?

Eug.

i cant fkn break my box...ive tried...

N where did u get trade price of $2600 from? ive been quoted by 2 separate reconditioners, less than $1300 for synchro and bearing replacement for my whole gearset (bar i give them the box out of the car).

Really depends what was wrong with his box to get a $2600 quote. Synchros and bearings are basic reconditioning, and yes you shouldn't get quoted more than about $1300 for a recondition. He might have damaged parts of the gearset/cluster though, which is code for "give Nissan your credit card". Or do the smart thing and buy a second handy in need of a reco :P

hmmmm if you pay the same money and u have to get it replaced, would you like to have one stronger and with buggs taken out or you don't care which one you get?

When I actually manage to break this box, then I'll worry about it

they usualy sell around $1500 - $1800

in saying that though i picked up all these:

s2 90,000kms box with nismo short shifter

1,000km old exceedy heavy duty clutch

new flywheel

and other bits to convert to manual (tailshaft, pedals, clutch master & slave)

for $1,500

so you can get a bargain if you look around... i got mine from a dude that was wrecking his 97 s2 locally.

If i could only get the synchros it would have been way under 2600... But i due to supersession i would have needed to replace a long list of parts... As soon as you tell nissan parts that you have a series 1 box they tell you to sit down before they give you the quote.

got my Series 2 97 model box with tail shaft and all the usual parts for 1100-luckily it was in adelaide (where i live)....

As far as iv seen, the differences are minimal, when it comes down to it, if you could find a series 1 box for considerably cheaper id be going for that instead of a series 2 box. The differences wont allow you to break the box with any reasonably modified car.

Is that even possible?

Every RB25t box that I've seen for sale is ~$1500 and none specify series 1 or 2.

I am still sceptical as to whether there are any differences. I can however see there would be a difference in bellhousings between R33 and R34 boxes due to the pull type clutch in the R34.

It was listed as 1150 (i think), the guy had a 32, but had been defected. He had both an AUTO 33 and Manual 33 Series 2 97 box. Car had 78k KM on it. I asked for 1100...he said yes, on the proviso i took both boxes...still have the auto box lying in my enclosed trailer

thats teh link for the sale haha

Bubba,

my thought process at the time was that considering how hard a 25Box is to break, the likelihood that this gearbox is a series one box in a series two car would be pretty small. Hence why i ASSUMED it is a Series 2 box out of a 97 series II R33 with 78k Km. I thought it was pretty logical to assume, but i see where your coming from. I think the seller just said it that way, to give history of the gearbox etc.

Either way, even if it is a series one box, as you have said the differences are minimal, and ill be damned if i break this box.
