The point of eBay is one security step further than the forums, i.e. you atleast have feedback that you can study for recent transactions of similar items. Yes, eBay accounts are corruptible, as are the sellers...but it's still a better security measure than a PM based trade on the forums.

And bank statements or not, I've dealt with many people trying to scam me in the past (none successful!) and these kind of people just deny deny deny, lie lie lie, even when they have been caught out. They will not stop at "oh you got a bank statement I better give you your cash back", or the threat of getting police involved. They are scamming in the first place because they are desperate scum.
