We just had new bearings put in my son's r32 gtr gearbox because it was getting a bit noisy.

It was nice and quiet for a day or so then some of the roll over noise returned.

It now also makes a zzz-zzz-zzz noise on the over run that we hadn't noticed before.

This brings me to my r33 box in my r32 gtst which occasionally makes the same noises.

Before I fitted the second hand r33 box to my gtst I fitted a new input shaft seal and because the front cover gasket broke I refitted the cover with just some sealant.

I checked that the circlip recess in the cover was deep enough not to bottom out on the front bearing circlip and there was still a small amount of endfloat in the front shaft so I thought the lack of gasket thickness was not an issue.

I spoke to the mechanic who did my son's gtr box about the noises and he said he didn't use the front cover gasket because the input shaft endfloat seemed excessive due to the gasket being quite thick.

After thinking about it for a while he said maybe the counter-shaft is hitting the front cover due to the reduced clearance.

Has anyone here seen any evidence of counter-shaft contact inside the front cover?

Anyone not used the front cover gasket or got the zzz-zzz-zzz noise?

How much rollover noise is normal in a healthy box?
