The 15 year rule allows all vehicles older than 15 years to be imported to Australia without restriction. On 2nd September, DOTARS (Department of Transport and Regional Services) made an announcement that they would start applying the month and year to the rule, rather than just the year, e.g. previously a vehicle manufactured any time in 1988 was eligible for import from 1st January 2003. Applying the month meant that a December 1988 model would only become eligible for import in December 2003.

This caught out anyone who had previously purchased a 1989 model in anticipation of being able to import it as of 1st January 2004, based on how DOTARS had applied the rule over recent times.

Fortunately DOTARS have now realised that this is an unfair approach and would serve to financially disadvantage anyone caught in this situation, really through no fault of their own.

Please note that for all those who bought and paid for vehicles prior to 2nd September 2003, DOTARS have announced that they are prepared to accept and consider applications for import approval for these vehicles from January 1st 2004.

This only applies to those who have already bought vehicles prior to the DOTARS change to the application of the rule (2nd September 2003), and evidence of a financial commitment prior to this date would have to be supplied for the special consideration to be applicable.

If you have any specific questions, please address these directly to DOTARS.

Common sense prevails in an Australian Government department!!! OMFG

...I think I`m gonna faint...

Nah, good news, I think a few lads can take a sigh of relief.

That's fantastic news.....

A friend of mine bought a 300ZX couple of months ago and was seriously pissed when the rule changed...

He's been spending the past couple of weeks trying to find some loophole to allow him to get the car in before September 2004 (it was made in Sep 89), and it now looks like that DOTARS has finally woken up or employed a car enthusiast who set them straight.

So I'd like to raise a charged glass to all those people who were set to be s**ewed by the rule change and say....

CHEERS!!!
