Well, for those of us that haven't done Targa Tasmania anyway

I rented a VW Scirocco. Nice little car. 2 litre turbo. You basically hold it flat everywhere except from the brake and corner entry. Other than that, pin it.

Sorry about the audio quality. I have a Go Pro Hero 5MP wide and set the sounds on Hi. Needs to be on Low. Bugger.

Also the batteries ran out around 5 corners from the end. Pox.

My 1st lap was 9min flat, second was an 8.43, third was this one, 8.36.6 and the last was an 8.41

I reckon with another 10 laps, there would be 8.20 something in it. Plenty of spots to make up time.

I highly recommend the XBOX360 PGR4 for practice. I also went last year and did 8 laps with a best time of 8.52. That time I went from the airport to the track and had been awake nearly the whole 24 hours on the plane. I was out of it.

Looks a fantastic experience. A group of mates back home go over twice a year, Easter and the long weekend the UK get at the end of August. It gets insanely busy. Were there any track closures with bike crashes? This is their main gripe with the track.

If anyone is planning a trip and has some time, there are a number of other attractions in the area inc. 4wding on a purpose built course.

Need to fill sometime next month, perhaps worth the quick trip over the Channel..

The fun factor is obscene. I was going to go the day before and had it totally rained and fogged out. I had to write off my flights and buy new ones. I wasn't going all that way and missing out.

The Scirocco is the same running gear as the Golf GTi. It has the DSG setup. I simply left it in S mode and let the gearbox take care of changing. Every time I tried the wipers turned on.

I'm hanging out to go back... I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone. FYI, to get there cheap, use www.kayak.com to find the flights.

You know Aaron - its 5,000 Euro to enter the 24hr Race. So with a Team of 4 thats 1,250 Euro each.

I reckon there has to be some companies over there that set-up lease deals with cars for that event.

I think we need to plan it for one day in the future :)

Our good buddy Theo would sort us out. That would be a blast. You could count me in for that. I better go out and get a job....

That's sooo Awesome! Well Done!

Adam and I are going there at the start of September, we have to decide between the Golf GTI & the VW Scirocco.

:)

Go for the Golf (I think the Scirocco is better, need to slow Adam down)

Wait until you experience the way the car dances over the crests as the wheels just leave the ground and the extreme G Forces in the bottom of the valleys.

Its more fun than doing sub 1.45min laps at the Island on a bike or in the GTR... And that is in a car much slower than both of those...

Was the rental car a regular rental car? As in, do they let you take them around the Ring without caring? Or was it hired from a place that rents out race cars? Might sound like a dumb question...just thought they would have a fit if they recognised one of their cars on youtube lol.

Nice one Aaron. I'm going over to see my brother in the UK next year and will definitely be going to see your mate theo. IT's one of these bucket list things everyone has to do!!

A tip with the go-pro, I found that putting it on low and drilling half a dozen holes in the waterproof casing thing makes the audio heaps better, eg:

    • How would i degree my cams on an rb25 hydraulic lifter head? lots of information online about degreeing cams on NEO or rb26 heads with solid lifters but cant find a definitive answer about hydraulic lifters. is the process just the same for both hydraulic and solid lifters on an rb (dial indicator on top of the lifter for measuring valve position) or do i have to mess with my lifter to make it solid for the degreeing process?
    • Hmm. Two terminals. Probably just conductivity. If you knew the shape of the curve, you could probably just do it with a multimeter.
    • Clinton and I spoke to Alan Heaphy at length last year at the Bathurst 1000 about the Gibson GTR's that he had at the track and the restoration work that his company was involved with. He has a number of people working for him who were part of Gibson Motorsport when these cars were being built and raced. What impressed me the most was the amount of first hand knowledge and information that he and his team have about the Gibson GTR's and their meticulous attention to detail in the restoration and maintenance of these cars.
    • When you track RPM vs time it's clean, unlike the OEM one, even with filtering there are ripples. Means no random misfires or triggering issues at higher RPM, especially if you have big lift cams and a noisier valve train due to heavier springs.
