Well, this seems as good a place as any to post a reply to this thread. This is my first post on the SAU forum, and hopefully not the last. Firstly, who am I? My name is David, and I've been into the car scene for a long time - since before many Skylines, and before Zed 32s. I was the Chief Steward at the Riverland Show, basically the head judge on the day. I've done this job for the Riverland show for many years, as have the other judges on the day. We do it on an entirely voluntary basis, as the show is well organised, well run, has heaps of great cars, and it's our way of paying back to the sport for the fun we've got out of it. From reading both this and the 300ZX forum threads, I can see that maybe some clarification of the trophies would benefit the show in the future. Just a point that I need to make up front though - I do own a 300ZX, and I am a some time poster to that forum. I appreciate all tough cars though - when you have to judge a hundred or more cars in a car show in a day, you get to appreciate a car for what the owner has put into it, not what it left the factory as. Also, the judging process isn't meant to be secret - everyone should know what it's all about.

I won't bore everyone with all the fine print involved with judging though, except to say that every single judged car is judged in at least three areas - interior, exterior and engine bay. If a car is locked, has the bonnet shut, or is not presentable in any one of these areas, it would be pretty remote for it to win an overall trophy. - I'll stick to a few categories, and if you want me to, I can elaborate on others afterwards.

Firstly, Club Display trophy. This category was evolved out of some pretty large shows based in Adelaide, which were getting up to 400 entries, but were also well supported by Clubs, much as the Riverland event is. The SA Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular actually offered big prizemoney for Top, second and third Club Display trophies - $500 for first place, if I recall correctly.

The Top Club Display trophy is intended to do two things. Firstly, it is intended to give the Club members who don't have potential trophy winning cars an opportunity to participate in organising a Club display that is interesting and informative, and having a part in winning a trophy, and something that promotes the Club and 'street machining' in general. Secondly, it is intended to create some peripheral interest in the members of the public that come along to a car show, but who aren't as passionate as the entrants (read mums, girlfriends, kids and mates here).

Top Club Display is judged on the following areas -

- display layout

- individual car details and information (eg info boards, photos, etc)

- a display theme, not necessarily anything to do with the cars themselves.

It is not about he overall quality of the cars themselves, although all cars should be at least presentable.

On this basis, and despite copping a warning about leaving early, the 300ZX Club won the trophy in 2009. I for one would really like to see some serious competition in the Club Display Trophy in 2010. It looks like SAU are contenders, as are the Falcon FPV/Tickford Club when they attend, as well as the Riverland Motorsport Club.

There are two other trophy categories which may be of interest too. One is "Best Displayed Vehicle", which is judged on the way the vehicle is displayed to the public. Items like jacking the car up, displaying undercarriage or detailing with mirrors, an information board about the car including pictures of the build and details of who did what on the car, and generally how well the public can see the car itself are factors in this area. The other is 'best individual vehicle display'. Whereas this might sound similar, it is more like a single car version of the best Club display, judged on the same criteria. The car doesn't have to be trophy winning condition, but the overall theme and presentation does.

Sorry, rambled on a bit there, but I hope this helps in the understanding of these trophy categories.

*** Disclaimer: I wasn't at the show and can only go by the photos I've seen and the comments that I've read. ***

I just went over and had a look at the AUS 300ZX forum and apart from having a better collection of photos than has been posted on here I think some kudos should go to them.

1. 6 of them drove over from Victoria including towing a race car over.
   
2. Their display of red car, black car, red car, black car etc suited their Halloween theme.
   
3. There is a lot more detail to their Halloween theme than what can be seen in the photos posted here.
   
4. It seems that they were the only club that had a theme - and 1 week from Halloween I think showed good initiative.
   
5. They were more appreciative and respectful of the SAU cars than SAU were of theirs. They make very positive comments about PURESX & appreciated PUREZED, HOSTILE, DOMHAR, ENR-034, Inline6 (no plates were on it) and SLED. I couldn't even tell how SAU lined up the cars until I saw it on the AUS 300ZX forum. One guy wants the DOMHAR plates too (his girlfriend is Vietnamese).
   
6. One of their female members dressed up as a witch (to a degree given it was 34) and walked around giving the kids lollies. Simple but very kind (no smart arse comments please).
   

SAU-SA is still in its infancy as a club and IMO we still have a lot of growing up to do. I for one see absolutely no value in making derogative comments about another car club unless they are exhibiting behaviour which will cause problems for all motoring enthusiasts. From what I gather the people at AUS 300ZX were a lot more humble in winning than we were gracious in defeat.

Thanks for clarifying all this for us all. I feel this has been blown a little out of proportion cause our comments were mostly tongue in cheek after overhearing comments had thru the day and gala night.

I was one of the many that had tabs on the holden club cause each and every car they had was pristine, from the interior, exterior, under bonnet and undercarriage... we were mostly puzzled how those cats didnt win

Our display is comprised of 100% street cars, the majority of which are dailies. We don't bother with the undercarriage detailing, and in the most case we ignore the engine bay, but we take pride especially in our interiors, exterior displays and boot installs (and sound systems)

I cant speak for the others, but to hear you say that we are serious contenders is very flattering considering the caliber of the cars that attend the riverland display, from Holdens to 300's to all the american muscle that we are very fortunate to see - not to mention euro exotics!

I can guarantee that next year we are going to have a kick arse display, and maybe we can get together with the 300 crew and display our rides, side by side as a united nissan tribute - and the obligatory sausage sizzle!

While there are some prizes that reward with cash, we're not like that. We want bragging rights But we want to earn it legitimately. Thats why we're already planning next years display

Thing is, the crew that I took to Loxton are the sorta cats that go up for cruising and many many many many beverages

It was mission successful as far as all were concerned

We'll be there next year (in renmark? nice town!) with bells on, bigger and louder than ever

Nice but too much detail bud. People don't want to stand all day reading specs... keep it simple or they will not bother to read it all.

Just basics like:

engine: RB26DETT 2.6 litre twin turbo

Upgrades: N1 turbos, cams, injectors and management computer.

Short and sweet if you will...

I dunno man, I think there are some there that will want to read the whole lot. Thats why its separated into paragraphs :

P1+2 = Stock Specifications

P3 = Modlist

Some folks are anal about numbers - those that dont understand it will skip it, but those that do will probably like it...

I did intend to have this printed A3 size and framed for the riverland show but ended up running out of time - got more stuff happening in the next 2 months anyhow so I'm not fussed as I would have had to reprint it anyhow... costs around $120 for professional printing and framing, cheaper if you want to skip quality or cut corners

Nah the printing is cheap

Its the professional framing that costs money - this includes a glass front offset from the display itself so it can be re-used at a later date (change the poster in other words)
