Hi

I have a mig,is it possible to weld alum?

If not what da ya suggest without purchasing a tig.

Thanks

I could be wrong...and quite often am, but it seems like a subtle ad

hmmm seems i was right...

...while im here the el cheapo gasless migs you can get from repco, supershite auto etc......im guessing it wouldnt be possible to weld aluminium with those...all this talk of gas has me a wee bit confused lol

you can get the alloy wire for those small units - and no doubt there are those disposable gas canisters in Argon also - but then you need a new liner for the wire feed ....

prob easier to buy one of those cheap AC TIG machines if you are going to try it.

cheers thanks chris :)

which do you think would be easier mig or tig...im a total newb at welding...was thinking of getting a mig cause i fail at arc welding somthing bad...but havent really had much practice in general

cheers thanks chris :D

Tig takes the longest to learn for sure, but it will give you a buzz when you lay your first perfect bead.

I dont stick weld very well at all, I have to guess what the filler is doing due to the slag hiding the weld.

I bought one of the chinese 200amp AC/DC tigs, similar to the ones on ebay. There is even one with a plasma cutter built in. Does the job nicely and easy enough to learn, just hit the Miller US website and practice, then practice some more. The gas can be expensive though.

My opinion is that mig is faster for batch work and tig is higher quality for custom work.

Bah, MMAW is easy, you just need to know where to look while welding. I watch the weld puddle at the end of the electrode, if you have the correct current settings for the material and electrode and maintain a nice short arc length. The rest takes care of itself!

    • No, I don't remember the exact reasoning (was 20 years ago!) but the cops didn't end up supplying it to us either. Actually my mother went through a similar thing recently where she was hit when stationary, flustered and didn't get address (she got plate details, name, phone and insurance company, but not address). Person who hit her blocked her number and their insurance company (naturally) would not provide any details. Her insurance company also required her to pay the at fault premium because she did not have the address, cops did not help as it is a minor civil matter (they said their only course was if the other driver had left the scene of the accident without providing any details). She only ended up getting that refunded because they happened to be insured with Suncorp and she was with APIA so same company owners. For some reason the address is critical in insurance companies recovering money from the at fault party
    • If you're driving something like an R32 through to R34, no chance of meeting Euro4. Euro4 came out in 2006, and car manufacturers back then were complaining how hard it would be to meet those regulations. Not a chance a vehicle 10 years earlier is going to be compliant.
    • I presume it would take more than just slapping a big modern catalyst on the exhaust? It's interesting though, looking at the old sales brochures and listings it does not mention anything about emissions. No one cared.
    • Yeh nice, looks like their part of keep it reet? Will have to swing past. I'd much prefer someone actually look at my car and custom make a part, then get a generic part online and hope it works.
    • No, but they will be WAAAAAAY too high. You will never get your ticket.
