I prefr EC over OP as well, and the standard TT Supra I drove there wasn't exactly high powered.

Oran GP has too many mickey mouse stop-go corners, the kerbs are insane through the esses after the bridge, and it seemed to have a very low grip surface. It has a few good good points as well though, from the bridge to the front straight I like, but the other half of the track sucks.

I prefer the longer, higher speed corners of Eastern Creek.

agree that at OP GP everything from turn 2 until you get up on the bridge is mickey mouse. stop go turn. and the difference there between a top driver and a hack will be bugger all. but once you nail it off the bridge it's all fun from there to turn 1 which is about 2/3s of the lap.

I do like EC too, it is nice and flowing but I just get more excitement out of OP. maybe thats because it is a bit low grip, and there are a lot of walls, and you do need a few short cuts, and there are a few nasty curbs to hop etc. plus exiting the last corner onto the straight wondering if you have judged it right or are you going to wipe off the mirror on the wall keeps you on your toes. the corner off the bridge and the flip/flop are great and turn 1 and into 2 is one where those with the balls will make big time on the pussys (like me) who can't carry the mega speed into there.

you left out lakeside.

I've only driven on Symmons and Bakerville. I like them both for different reasons, Symmons is all about bravery under brakes, and carrying high speed through the sweepers. Baskerville is a technical track on a rubbish surface. I need to get down to Baskerville more, but there arn't as many events down there, and Symmons is only a 30min drive for me too. So Baskerville would be my favorite that i've driven on..

Wow! , someone that agree's with me about symmons being about brake control as much as power  , i rate baskerville and symmons pretty much on par with each other (but for different reasons of course) , i'm supposed to be going to PI late this year , i'm looking forward to a different track!

f*kc off. as if that will not be the new coolest brisby story. heaps better than the falling off a balcony story that is currently in the number one spot. just imagine the kudos troy! "i thought I could take it flat in top gear...but......"

flat through eau rouge or bust I say. in fact if you don't do it or die trying then don't bother coming back to this proud country. if mark webber can do it. you can do it. go get 'em tiger.

so, 3 people have only ever been to one race track in their life! lol

Poor QLD raceway. Who designed it. Wasnt it funded by the state govt? How did they get it so wrong. I suspect it is the worst track in the country, my god it cant be worse then Calder? Yeh actually, Calder sux pretty hard. But any track is still awesome fun :)

I remember reading a poll on Australia's best racing circuits in a car mag and the top 4 results from race car drivers around Australia were:

1. Bathurst (yes it's that good)

2. Phillip Island

3. Eastern Creek

4. Oran Park GP

problem with Bathurst is its a temporary/street cicuit. Club level people don't really have much access to it. Unless you want to spend $5K on the Drive Bathurst sprint, which I certainly don't! The only other option is to go circuit racing with FoSC, which would be much better value, if you can get in. Hell, you could get a cage, race suit and do the FOSC event and still have change left over from $5K!

For regular club level guys the closest you'll get is BLCC hillclimbs and sprints using parts of the circuit. Mountain Straight Hillclimb is awesome! The Esses Hillclimb is run in reverse direction and is pretty boring - its just a power track that way. And the Conrod Supersprint is a bit of fun, but it only has 3 real corners in it, so its all about power too. Good fun if you run against a car of similar speed though.

I'd love to have a drive of PI, but its just too far away for me.

that pretty much sums up why i left it off.

my interest was in the best club level tracks as i am a long way off turing Aus folling IP or some thing similar.

thanks for the feed back so far. im pleased it generated a bit of interest.

Agree about Bathurst as well. Not that accessable to the club driver.

I've been lucky to do sections of it during the East Coast Targa Rally in 2005. They held a special stage beginning just after hell corner (turn 1) going up mountain straight, they put in some bollard man made chicanes to keep speeds down, then we went up through the cutting, all the way up and over the top of skyline (my highlight), down through the esses, dipper, forest elbow etc, onto conrod straight, then they put in another bollard chicane and we finished the stage about half way down conrod.

I remember that funny feeling in my stomach as we went over skyline, a bit like when you're in a lift. Priceless.

    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
    • There's a huge reason manufacturers are tuning in dead flat torque curves... Make them reliable (and more drive able)
    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
