It's called 'dosing' in the VL world, also know as 'flutters', but around here it's best described as 'compressor surge'.

It's the sound of the air bouncing off the turbine blades when the butterfly to the intake plenum is closed. Normally all this pressurised air get's released by the Blow Off Valve, but if you don't have one, it does that.

Different length, shape and designs of pipes make different noises...

It's either a HKS Super Sequential BOV or some cheap ass BOV or like what others have said compressor surge.

HKS Super Sequential BOV = Wank (Only useful on highly tuned cars that are running a lot of boost and the stock one cannot handle it any more)

Compressor Surge = Say goodbye to your turbo.

Is that the HKS SSQV BoV? I've been trying to convince a mate to buy one for his evo, but all the vids I've seen of it its a sharp, high pitched noise rather than the VL flutter.

Just curious, is "dosing" unique only to the VL, or is there a specific reason VL owners choose it?

Yeah either it's the HKS BOV or like others have said with the metal pipe.

Any turbo car can make the noise, it just depends on the BOV set up or whatever the owner does to it.

The stock BOV should not make any noise, at least no "Stu Tu Tu".

But if you put on an air pod, while still having your stock BOV, you will get a nice "Suction" noise then a "Choo" at the end (Only when on boost).

What the hell is that noise? I've heard it twice now, both times from VLs. Is it some tricked out BoV?

If you ask me I think it sound ridiculous. My girlfriend was in hysterics for about 10min as we drove beside this thing.

Thanks.

LOL! just search "VL turbo dose" on youtube,,theres thousands of videos on that stuff,,apparently they're a favourite with wog guys and their significant others

my ceffy doses like an athlete on the roids, but it comes from factory with no recirculation valve, and still runs stock boost on a stock turbo. all you have to do is take out the intake resonator and bolt in a pod and I get instant flutters.

GAGF if that's bad for the turbo, it came from factory like it and has run for 180,000 kms with no damage to the turbo or engine.

that is incorrect.

the only relation a BOV has to flutter/dosing is whther its blocked or not. the type of flutter/dose depends on the width, length and material of the induction pipe. the turbocharger does play a roll aswell.

all a bov does is hold the air trapped in the piping. so it bounces around and goes back through the turbo, for the turbo wheel fins to chop up and make a stuttered noise.

a SSQV HKS BOV has nothing to do with dosing....its just like any other BOV... but produces a whistle like sound when air goes through it. if you block it off, its the same as your OEM bov and every other blocked bov. does nothing special.

the Dose you hear on VLs sound like stupid dolphins or piegons as you heard.

they run a small metal pipe, no bov, and multiple bends to magnify thehigh pictched stuttered noise.

alot of the high powered veicles in japan and here automaticlly produce this sound as a side affect for high horsepower aplications but usally produce a much deeper tone due to larger turbos.

this is because piping is usally much larger due to larger turbocharges and dont run many bends.

although the title says HKS SSQV, its incorrect.

personally i hate the high pitched doses, which have been attached to wogs and VLs. but i am madly in love with the noise similar to the 650hp R34 GTR videoed above. would prefer it over a OEM "CHOO" or whistle anyday

my 2c

:P

the vl boys cut a gap in there intercooler piping to put there afm so that there is no restriction between pod and turbo.

using diffrent lengths and angles of piping gives diffrent pitch noises.

alot of the guys that i went drifting with on the track a while ago had it, sounds sick when your using your accelerator to control the slide.

    • These are small points I should actually add to my original post. GKtech makes an extended slave line for this conversion. It's what I use, and it works well. You'll also need a CD009 slave cylinder.  S/R Chassis Z33/Z34 Conversion braided clutch line As for transmission sensors, you'll need to both extend the wiring and replace the connectors. I can't recall which is which, but one is your neutral switch and the other the reverse switch. As they are just switches, just test for continuity with your transmission in neutral or reverse to figure out which is which. • I’ll try and see it could be the release bearing. As for the 4th gear grind maybe clutch doesn’t disengage properly cause it is slightly like very slightly hard to go into first could be due to the slab cylinder pin being short uni clutch is a twin plate.   Ive attached some assembly photos hopefully you can open the link and see maybe detect what’s wrong https://share.icloud.com/photos/0dc2YvW__Hl6jl-l2_0jejjpg https://share.icloud.com/photos/09e0jkWOK-vP48c1cfY6u3ViA https://share.icloud.com/photos/0b4rDmh5R7pK7fb1VtND73a3g https://share.icloud.com/photos/05eeUi_6dC4DVi80jOUYDgb0g https://share.icloud.com/photos/06335TgY1XxyIJal_wkdQLhzw
    • Yeah for sure that is peddle adjustment
    • What are your thoughts on this after having it for a while, worth getting?
    • Downshifts are harder on transmissions than upshifts, the input shaft naturally slows down once disconnected from the engine so the synchros aren't doing all the work. There's no "natural" tendency for an input shaft to increase RPM. Something is not right there, I don't have a great answer on what. You can try a dedicated GL4 75W90, I plan to switch to Motorcraft XT-M5-QS which is supposedly a very good 75W90 for NB Miatas which have a weirdly sensitive transmission from the factory. I would chase down why your clutch is making a hissing noise, that's not normal. It might be no big deal but in the absence of anything else to investigate I would look at that.
