Sydney Must Do/eat/visit~plz Recommend Some

Hey guys,

Going off to sydney in a week or two for juz a 3 days trip.

can anyone recommend some place that must do/eat/visit in CBD?

Gonna stay in walking distance to Kings Cross Station, no car so prob gonna take taxi/train/foot for main transport.

How does the public transport work in Sydney compare with Melb?~do you buy single way ticket to each location/station or daily ticket for any rides?

I already some famours place like QVB, darling harbour, Bridge, Tower last time when I was there for 4 days trip.

So if anyone can recommend any nice place to eat too~(ima asian and going with my bf and asisn friend) so I guess we prob going to visit china town for dinner for sure.

Also what is the best way to go to Fish market without car?

I live in sydney and i have found the public transport great. But when staying in the C.B.D i would rather walk as you get to see everything and sometimes things just pop up. If you want to take some great photo's of sydney harbour bridge i would suggest going to governer mac. chair . If you walk down past circular quay head towards the opera house and walk around to the right there is a nice park there with amazing views.

Also if you prefer monorail is a good place to take you everywhere like darling harbour (get off here for the fish markets) also stops at china town , and world square .

Even if you got time catch the train or bus over to bondi westfields. Its got everything in the one shop and the great thing is you wont have to pay for parking ! The food court there is called the harbour room its got views of sydney harbour as well. If you head up to level 6 there is kamfook yum cha , kelly steak and grill and some chocolate store max's or something. Its worth the trip.

As for places to eat, Golden Century in Chinatown is a good place for seafood. Lots of Korean restaurants around the corner of Pitt Street and Liverpool Street, about 5 mins walk from Chinatown.

If you've got a spare $200 per head, you can try Tetsuya's, $300 if you want the matching wine to go with the meal. I've had it on good authority that it's pretty good. Well, considering it was voted the 3rd best Restaurant in the world a couple of years ago. You'll need to book in advance for this place, at it's peak, 3 month waiting list, I think that's gone down abit since then as the GFC has hit.

Trendy bars and other places to eat would be Cockle Bay Wharf, which is the opposite side of Darling Harbour. But the better place for good drinking holes is King Street Wharf, which is on the otherside of the Sydney Aquarium when at Cockle Bay. King Street Wharf also has some nice places to eat. Bungalow8 is a pretty popular place to go.

Ivy is the "It" place as far as I know in Sydney for Friday/Saturday night drinks. You'll need to dress well to get in, for Melbournites, this shouldn't be a problem for you! It's right opposite Wynyard Station on George Street. Mind you, there are big queues to get in after ~6:30pm on a Friday night.

As for attactions, The Rocks area is generally quite nice for a walk. Bondi if you haven't been there. You're staying in the red light district of Sydney, never a dull moment there.

Oh, if you're here on a weekend, there's the Sydney Fish Markets near Pyrmont, pretty famous place to visit. Also has decent Yumcha there too.

tetsyus is actuslly about an 8 month wait right now..... for a weekend, almost 1 year. tried to book not too long ago

ok places to eat. since I live in the city and never cook i've eaten at most places around. if you want to try a few here are my picks:

Jazushi - devonshire st surry hills (2 min walk from central station, take devonshire st exit).

this place has great japanese food and has live jaz most nights. it's also owned, and staffed by japanese people (this does make a big difference). I eat there a lot and have not had a dish i did not like there, and I've eaten some great japanese food all over japan to compare it with.

Superbowl - Chinatown mall area. if you go to chinatown, go to superbowl. it looks like nothing at all but is easily the best chinese restaurant in chinatown. you'll spot it easily. all the other restaurants will be nearly empty and have touts outside trying to lure you in. one of them will be full. that's superbowl....

If you like ramen go to ichi ban boshi which is in pitt st in the shopping centre next to kinokuniya book shop (also worth visiting).

forget tetsuyas you have basically no chance of getting in unless you want to go next year. if you want a top class dining experience instead go to the berrowra waters inn. not cheap, around $150-$200 per person but amazing food. probably among the top 5 in sydney. it's on the water and only accesible by their private boat (they pick you up) or by water taxi, or sea plane if you're keen! For you I'd say get a train up to berrowra or hire a car for the day.

to get to the fish markets the best way is by light rail. the light rail stops pretty much just outside. monorail only goes to darling harbour, not to the fishmarkets and it's probably 10min walk or so from there.

consider having a drink at opera bar at sunset. much nicer in summer as it'll be a bit chilly this time of year. but still a beautiful place to sit and have a nice drink.

or check out horizon bar in the shangri la hotel. nice flaming cocktails (i believe one of only a handful of places that do it due to OH+S!).

Ivy is nice too. but no real views.

do the harbour bridge walk if you haven't done it. great way to do a day trip.

public transport here is basically you just buy tickets either one way (example, kings cross to central) or you can buy a return ticket if you're just going from A-B then B-A. if you want to go A-B, B-C, C-A then you'll need to just buy single tickets for each journey.

A trip to Sydney just isnt complete without a visit to Hurricanes. They're in Bondi Beach and Darling Harbor. Usually booked out a week or 2 in advance, so plan ahead. Very reasonable pricing for the quality of meals. Very filling meals. Trendy aswel so take the gf.

Didnt think much of Hurricanes as far as steak went. If your after a top of the line steak check out La Grillade in crows nest, the wagyu steak is excellent... and $75. Make sure you order their desert sampler (perfect for 2).

Closest train station is st leonards but it will still require a short walk.

That said, cab from the cbd, nth sydney or st leonards would stiull be cheapish.

For real fine dining on short notice i agree tetsuyas is out of the question... i have a booking in 5 days but i booked that in january.

Two great alternatives are Milsons in Kirrabilli, or 41 in chifley tower (42nd floor, great view and the only toilet i know of that will give you vertigo).

I've managed to book both on short notice. reserve about $300 for two at milson or $500 for 41.

Also the golden.. thingy.. in china town (forgot its name) is a great place... and as a bit of trivia... Chef Tetsuya is also known to eat there.

forget hurricanes, you want a nice steak restaurant, go to Prime. it's in GPO next to macquarie bank in pitt st. might spot a few society types there too and probably the best steak in sydney.

Go eat at Wagaya, right opposite entertainment center, on harbour st. Up some stairs.

Very nice vibe inside and touch panel ordering screens at each table.

Japanese pub food, but pretty authentic and covers most bases.

Pressing the picture of a draft beer, and it arrives within 30 seconds. As if by magic.

No need to figure out what to get all in advance. No need to talk to a waiter/waitress

except to thank them for how quick the service is.

You can spend a lot there because it is fun and easy and all the dishes are small but cheap

but geez nothing like tetsuya's ..

Hey guys, reviving a thread from a few months ago.

I will be in Sydney for work for the next three days, Monday to Wednesday. I will be in the C.B.D on Monday during the day, early afternoon, but then I'll be based in Cronulla for the next two nights.

So, any recommended restaurants in Cronulla for a bite? No seafood please, hahahaha. Anything else I'm alright with, steaks, asian, mexican, middle eastern, etc, etc. I'll be dining on my own too
