New Garrett 550hp Turbo (cheap Upgrade)

Recommended Posts

Hey mate keen on this turbo.

What needs to be done to fit it to a gtt? Looking at something to replace the stocker that I'm running now. What sort of power gains am I looking at with supportive mods?

Keen 800 delivered?

In terms of mods to fit, i'm not too sure as i've only ever worked on RB20's but i'd assume all the normal stuff like Dump Pipe, Lines, Intake etc.

Power depends on supporting mods, but it'll make 270-280kw on a stock SR20 at 22psi so i'd assume on a 25NEO it'll make at least that with enough fuel.

$800 Delivered is fine with me, provided it all happens quick as I want to order my New Turbo for another project.

Yeah nice, thought it would be all the usual suspects.

Can anyone confirm this that has fitted one of these turbos or something similar to a 25NEO? Is this going to be a massive pain in the ass? Would this size still be a low mount or is that out of the question?

You said that you have only worked on RB20's, has this ever been fitted to a RB20?

Do you have any lines etc that would come with the buy or is it just the turbo itself?

Supporting mods are: FMIC, 3" bellmouth dump to high flow cat to HKS cat back xhorst, spitfires, HKS EVC 5 set at 10psi, exedy heavy duty clutch. Soon to come would be Apexi SAFC NEO maybe an aftermarket fuel pump could be on the cards too if this puppy needs a bit more juice, everything else stardard. Do you have a rough idea of the power gains i would be looking at if i tune to max out standrard injectors?

Sorry for the 20million questions!!!

Cheers, Kyle

You will definately need more fuel!!! I would suggest you talk to a performance shop before you buy a turbo as you will need to do a few mods first. I maxed out my injectors with a high flow turbo only making 200rwkw...

Pretty sure max standard injectors get up to is about ~220kw+ dont forget it is an external gate turbo, so you will also need a new manifold and the external gate, and this may not suit the dump pipe u've got, so then you may have to customise/replace the dump/front pipe too... your also probably going to have issues with the afm, so you may need to replace the standard one with a z32 (from a 300zx) add that ontop of the fuel pump.... plus if you get the power up, u may find ur heavy duty clutch wont do the job anymore and that will need an upgrade....

isn't moddifying fun!

.....and a bloody headache!

I guess it's the old story, with any mod you can go on and on until your hearts content.

I've got a mate who about to put one on his 34GTT, he's just running a cheap highmount manifold, ebay gate and a custom dump. Then on the fuel side just some bigger injectors and a bosch pump.

It's like anything mate, if you don't run 20psi (which you don't need too) theres less issues with fuel etc.

Just buy it :-) Any turbo that makes extra power is gonna take some supporting mods...

    • Great info @tidi0x  Will definitely be handy for others and maybe me if I decide to keep the shit box H pattern.
    • Bumping this up one last time.... I wanted to follow up on the clutch slave issue. I realized that what the issue comes down to is the pocket is flat milled, and the cylinder does not want rest flat. So in order to mount it correctly you will need to make a spacer for the fingers so the cylinder is floating. I took two plates of aluminum, drilled some holes and was good. I did still need to make the relief cuts in the bell housing, as even with the spacer the bleed section still interferes. The OE bell housing the mounting holes are raised from the housing.
    • If the event in USA goes ahead will be interesting as it seems the rules will get more cars over here. Apparently the track is laguna seca too. Yeah s15, if I get a the lower dash trims, centre console and change front cross member to standard LCA position will fit clubsprint. See how rules are as i would rather do complete widebody than a bolt on flare to run the 295 with proper clearance.
    • If the car is legal height I can't see it being an issue. Found a thread on reddit that might offer some insight.   I got a ticket from a copper in QLD for my S15 being too low. They had this wheel thing on a stick that they put under the car and it hit my exhaust. Anyhow went to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust tucked up/hung a little higher and I wound the coilovers up a smidge. Don't think I even had to go back to the police station unlike when I got defected for having a carbon bonnet when I brought the S15 from the ACT to QLD and had to replace it and then rock up at a police station and have a yougish female officer who knew nothing about cars confirm that I had changed bonnets. Should have just painted the carbon bonnet yellow to match the rest of the car lol
    • Id like to race in the US i think alot of those track would suit me   For the s15? Youd be stuck between club sprint and the new Open Am wouldnt you depending on how much interior you have left in
