well ..I've been to the pros and I know how much a decent setup costs (close to $2k for entrylevel) but I just can't see it happening any time soon due to lack of funds..

In the meantime .. I have no doof doof whatsoever (BASS) so I was wondering if it's actually POSSIBLE to get some friggin bass for under $500 ? As in mono amp ..(just for the sub) and cabling for the sub ..

I'm OK with the quality of my fronts and tweeters for now but I HAVE NO FRIGGIN BASS GODDAMMIT! I had my front doors done properly with dynamat and decent fronts/tweeters but the whole thing is still just running off a $150 headunit and I HAVE NO BASS GOD DAMMNIT!!!

anyway .. am I totally barking up the wrong tree or is it even remotely feasible to have an elcheapo (BUT NOT NASTY) sub/enclosure put in my boot with a non-nasty but cheap monoamp so that I can have SO GOD DAMN BASS!?!@? I realize I won't get anything special but I just want to hear some friggin bass when I play my music

Would heavy guage cabling just for the sub suffice if I only want a monoamp to power the sub or do I HAVE TO upgrade all my speakers cabling? I'm happy to run the fronts off the shitty kenwood headunit JUST WANT SOME DAMN DOOF DOOF

Ok before I emberass myself anymore in this drunken state I shall leave you with those questions to ponder on and please put the flamethrowers away I KNOW how much it costs to do the whole shebang properly I just cant afford it and the lack of doof-doof is driving me nuts its like listening to an IPOD

hey charlie where abouts are ya? do you sell audio gear or work in the indust at all ? I'll give you a call next week sometime would love to get some bass pumping soon.. I wouldnt mind 2nd hand gear at all as long as its not dodgy and works as I can probably get better stuff that way ..ie someones whos upgrading from entry level 'good shit' and wants to get rid of their amp/sub

go to your local car audio joint fusion have the sub and amp in a tube thingy for under 500 add wiring and get the guys to install and should have some change left over

sounds not bad in a old school land rover :P

I'm probably going to get flamed by all the car audio lovers on here, but Rampage branded subs from Supercheap go pretty good :P or even try buying one of those ebay sub + amp + wiring kits which are like 120 for the lot lol.

I've got 2 X 10s boxed brand new selling for $80 :P

if I were to get something like this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pioneer-12-Sub-and-...%3A1%7C294%3A50

...it's pretty cheap, $100 so can't really go wrong because if it sounds like shit it's only $100 down the drain. But anything sounds better than no bass so ...

anyway, to my question ... How hard would it be to wire this thing in without frying my electrical system? Would a pro need to install it? What's needed ..Does it connect straight to the fuse box with a massive fuse or how's it work ?

Hi Denis

Im a pro installer in the industry, i can get my hand on second hand (mostly ex demo) or new and i can organise installation.

Id recomend getting a 4ch amp and a single 12inch in a enclosure, bridge the amp to run the sub and your existing front speakers. This will give you good bass and more presence in the front to keep up with the sub.

Ill Pm you my number.

while I'd prefer that it blows the cost of the setup way out as all the cabling would need to be done properly .. Am leaning towards that pioneer kit on ebay, $120 and has the full wiring kit ... can't be that bad. I just want to be able to hear some bass, don't need anything better for the fronts tbh..

Hook it straight to the battery =] The fuse will prevent it from frying your electrical system. Then run a cable onto the body of your car for grounding.

That amplifier looks extremely weak. You will get sick of that very quickly unless you go out and swap your car for a hatch back .

I guess that Ebay deal could work if you just want something to fill in the bass. Just make sure you have the appropriate outputs on your head unit to use it. And do keep in mind, if its on Ebay, its on there for a reason.

that ebay one is 200W which is the same as what I was originally quoted for with a $2k setup from a pro shop..plus I'm not doing anything to the fronts so should be plenty of bass fill dontcha think? $100 means I can stop dreaming and have atleast something ..because my only other option for the next 6-12 months atleast is to have no bass at all

how long do you reckon it would take a pro to instal the cabling for the ebay setup? just the amp/sub? access to headunit outputs is easy..

you need amp turn on cable, run rca to amp and that's from units side, then you got power and negative on amp , plus connect turn on wire and rca to amp and bridge speakers for sub and your done

should take to 30-45mins

and dont take it to your jb hi fi or strathfield to wire it trust me

ok all sounds very simple and I assume the wiring kit will have an inline fuse on the positive cable that goes to the amp .. just another couple of Qs please

1) how's the sub powered? Does it require its own power connection?

2) when you say 'bridge speakers for sub' what do you mean precisely

3) when I run the RCAs and power cables thru cabin should I keep the RCAs seprate from the power cables ? Will running them along the same door sill cause interference/noise ? Should I run RCAs on say passenger side and power on driver side?

Thanks

1. you run the sub off the amp same like any speakers it requires a wire from amp to sub

2.take for example; a 2 channel amp puts out 100 x 2 rms. each channel is receiving 100 rms respectively. by bridging the amp, you are combining channels to put out 200 rms to only 1 channel

3.always keep rca separate to power wires. i usually run rca and speaker cable down passenger side and power on drivers side

in r33 its very easy as you have battery in boot so only requires a small amount of power wire

as for noise i had issue with noise being induced thru power wire for head unit , but you might be lucky . i sent you pm

hope this helps

    • I bought the model back in Japan in Feb. I realised I could never build it, looked around for people who could build it, turns out there's some very skilled people out there that will make copies of 1:1 cars or near enough. I'm not really a photo guy... but people were dragging me in a group chat for the choice of bumper as someone else saw the car before it was finished as they are also a customer of that shop. I took the photo in the above post because I was pretty confident that the lip would work wonders for it. Here's some more in-progress and almost-done pics. It gives a good enough idea as to what the rear looks like!   I have also booked in a track day at the end of January. Lets all hope that is nothing but pure fun and games. If it's not pure fun and games, well, I've already got half an engine spare in the cupboard
    • Well, do ya, punk? Seriously though, let's fu<king go! The colour and kit looks amazing on the car. Do you have any shots from the rear? I don't quite follow how the model came around. You bought the white kit and he modified it to match your car? Looks nuts either way!
    • So my car is finally back from paint! This took an absolutely insane amount of work and should get it's own build thread - but I didn't build it. It was completed by Troy @ https://scalekustoms.com.au/ I originally bought the AOSHIMA URAS Type R kit while I was in Japan, it's supposed to look like this when assembled: Now, I thought that was cool enough until I opened the box with Dismay, as there's no way I could possibly have completed it. The thing is 1/24 and has details down to the steering wheel horn button, which is a 2mm diameter sticker. I originally wondered if someone could make it at all, as is - But then things got a little carried away. It's worth noting that the model does not have an openable bonne, let alone engine bay, OR an openable boot. - Troy has worked wonders with 3D printer and presumably better eyes than I will ever have. My photos suck, so I will post up some of his in-progress ones he sent to me during the way. Unsuprisingly, he is very detailed. A lot of these are out of order. But he: 1) Made a LS engine and an engine bay appear out of thin air 2) Made the bonnet removable 3) Printed the rims I will buy in the future (or any rim you want) 4) Printed and added the wing that is going on 5) Tinted my back windows as this is what my car has IRL (privacy glass) 6) Added a licence plate. 7) Somehow did the interior 8) 3D Printed my actual seats 9) Made the exhaust under the car connect even though this is likely invisible. 10) Created a boot with my fking battery box, power steering reservoir, subwoofer and toolboxes back there. To say it's insane is an understatement. And I f**ked it all up because when I was re-mounting the wing (it broke in transit) I spilled glue everywhere and ripped paint up and Gregged the rear half of the car. Which about makes sense. Also, this arrived on the same day. Quite the change from: I spent 16 hours per day over the next 3 days pre-christmas putting the interior back together, mounting lip, fixing various bodykit problems with window mouldings, etc. and servicing, rebuilding my 370z brakes to go on the car 'soon', messing with heights to check clearances for new wheels, etc. I also had a foray into mounting wiper-mounted washer jets which was an absolute disaster. The bodyshop has welded (and painted) over the stock jet locations for reasons unknown to everybody (i.e they forgot) I also wanted to wire in the oil pressure sensor on Christmas Eve which was a BAD IDEA. You do not know terror like pulling your ECU apart, pinning in half-fitting pins that aren't the right ones, but trying anyway because it's Christmas eve, putting your ECU back together and having a no-start condition with a fuel pump not priming. Then you undo all your work and the fuel pump still doesn't prime. So after all that terror and horror and pain and tedious disassembly, the issue was the relay in the boot which seems to have died/stuck when I was turning the car off and on about 700 times testing shitty washer jets. I also re-wired the fuel pump power plug which fell apart in my hands. I am very happy I had 3 extra pre-made ones from a few posts/last Christmas's breakdown. https://bluewireautomotive.com/products/10-x-pcm-ecm-ecu-terminals I have put an order for these in, so I can actually add the pins to the ECU properly. The commodore ECU does not have the pins for Oil Pressure via ODB2. However the ECU can support it if you create the pins and wire them in. So for round two, and somehow attempting to route that into the engine bay through my impossible engine bay grommet is a fight for another day. It's 40C in Melbourne tomorrow, I am half tempted to drive the car with the aircon on to deliver presents to my partner's family and see if it helps with the overheating-on-40C-days-in-traffic-with-aircon-on-only issue that the vents were intended to solve. Do I feel lucky?
    • Yes, while being... strictly unnecessary. Tuning is a bit like quantum physics. You don't need to understand what Schroedinger's equation actually means. You just need to run the computation and accept the answers. With tuning, you just push page up/down until the exhaust tells you that you've got the fuel right. The VE can stay hidden behind the curtain like the Wizard of Oz and you'll never need to know what he looked like.
    • The second part yes, the first part about easy VE calculation is something I've seen a few people talk about online.
