Couldn't sleep so i thought i'd tell a little story about my weekend...

On Sat night was on my way out to the Riverland for a 21st. Only got as far as Munno Para/Kudla where some f@$&whit pulled out of a street (Dalkeith Rd. Kudla) to turn right onto Main Nth Rd while i was heading north on the highway. Coming up to the Dalkeith/Main Nth Rd intersection the car in front of me had to swerve into the right lane to avoid hitting this prick who had his nose out into the left lane. I was only about 40-50m behind and moved into the right lane to avoid hitting him when he decided to shoot out in front of me and then sit in the middle of the road. I hit the breaks over 80 kph but still collided with him and the GTR is now totaled. It sent him into a 360. The bloke had 3 young kids in the back and if i hadn't swerved away to the left slightly i would've plowed right through the side of the car. It will always bewilder as to what he was trying to do.

He was completely in the wrong but who knows if i'll get back what my car is worth. Luckily i had a few witnesses and the cops, firefighters etc came to clean up he mess. I've come out of it with a crook neck and back and have taken this week off of work to recover. Going to have a look at the car tomorrow or Fri but i'd almost say for certain it is written off. For a laugh, the owner of the other car has requested that i get quotes from any 2 crash repairers so that they can work out whether they want to pay the excess on their insurance or pay out the damages. I can't understand how they think it could be less than their excess! $400 wouldn't pay for the respray on 1 panel!! All good though, just more pointless running around.

I rang them up about how the kids were and luckily they were all-in-all ok. One of them came out with a bit of swelling and bruising on his face from cracking his head on the door but no serious injury.

I've spent a lot of time and effort into making the car what it was and it is such a kick in the teeth knowing that all that hard work has gone to waste, not to mention the sentimental attachment that comes with owning the car for 2 odd yrs.

Suppose what i am looking for out of this thread is maybe some guidance as to what i do from here as i haven't been in this situation before. I would like to know, say, what happens to the car? It was modified and so would like to be able to take some stuff back in the hope to get another GTR. I'm assuming that it would be well undervalued so was wondering if there was a way around that.

Well been a Skyline owner for about 6yrs, it's about time i wrote in ay.... Thanks for ur time ppls!! Let me know ur thoughts!

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear about your crash mate and I hope you pull up okay with your neck and back. I unfortunately have been involved in many crashes, 4 of which I've been injured in and 3 where the car I was driving was written off. In your post you didn't mention whether your car was insured and if so who it's insured through and whether that is for an agreed amount or market value and whether you have any rights/claims on the wreckage.

1. You need to have reported the accident to the police to get an accident number, I'm assuming this happened at the crash site, but it will be a small blue card.

2. You need to fill out a claims form for your insurance company.

3. You need to fill out a claims form for Compulsory Third Party Injury. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! The injuries you have sustain may effect you long term.

4. Find out where the car is and go there and take heaps photos (I'm assuming that the cops called tow trucks to move the vehicles involved).

5. Remove your registration disc and get a form from Transport SA to get a refund back on the unused time remaining. You may need to get the form signed by a JP.

6. Your insurance company will send out an assessor to determine if the car is indeed a complete write off. If that is the case then they will settle your claim and begin a claim against the other driver's insurance company. This can take years if fault is being disputed but you should have your payout (for the car) within a month.

7. If the car is a complete write off then you have to negotiate with your insurance company to buy the wreckage back if you want to remove parts.

8. If the insurance company denies you that option then you need to find out when the car will go up for auction and bid on it.

That is all off of the top of my head at 4:22am in the morning so I apologise if anything is inaccurate.

hard luck budd that intersection has been so dangerous for many years now especially with it being so dark and the increase of traffic...

no doubt the car will be sitting at the smithfield crash repairers but like ppl said find where it is go take pictures, usually you can negotiate and buy the wreck back and usually at a very low price which just come outs of your payout.

always try to look on the bright side bud, your here no one was seriously hurt! even tho sentimental cars bend and can be bought again if we break its all over.

p.s my gtr is for sale if you want to buy another down the track :)

hope all goes well, dont waste anytime start ringing around now get onto your insurancwe company ect ect

Thanks for the support guys, except for u, selfish Dan! Friendly Dan seems like a heaps better bloke. A big thanks to writeoff for the comprehensive advice. I should have mentioned that i DON'T have insurance.

Did go down to the crashies today and they gave me a bit more insight as to where i go from here. They said i can claim total loss in which i get the pay out of what the car would've been worth minus the cost of the wreck and i get to keep the wreck (providing all goes well with the insurance company). Seems like a fairish deal atm, just all depends on what they value the car at.

I took some pics of it and i'll post them up when i get the camera tomoz.

Once again, cheers for the advice David!

Not very helpful for a guy who's just been in a crash, been injured and had his car written off. Poor form dude.

Mark may be young, he may have a bad driving history, he may never have had insurance before and have a really low rating, he may be tight on $ - there are heaps of reasons why people don't have insurance. It's a gamble and it was his choice to make not yours to judge. FFS the guys had a pretty rough week.

Mark - if you can provide as many receipts as possible to the other guy's insurance company this will help increase the value of your car. You should provide them with a full list of the modifications and the current price of these mods from a place like Just Jap etc. The more evidence you can provide that would increase the value of your car the better.

I also forgot to mention that you are allowed to remove personal belongings from your car. Take a tool set and get busy if you want to grab some of your mods.

Sorry Dave, you're dead wrong on this

If you have a car thats worth more than $20k. as most GTR's are, and you are aware of the fact that a) GTR's are a favourite for car thieves and b) its an import and costs a LOT of money to get fixed. If you seriously drive an imported street legal racecar, and think that its going to be cheap to fix out of your own pocket, then you're deluded. And if you can afford a 32 GTR and not afford the insurance, then in actual fact, you cannot afford an R32 GTR. Period.

It might seem harsh, but stupid is as stupid does. Im not saying you deserved to crash or injure yourself, but you're playing with fire anytime you take ANY car out on the road without insurance, double that if its an import and double that again if its a niche car that thieves and hoons like to drive.

Its like having a $45k car and driving it on the road with bald tyres. We all know how that turns out.

And while this is a bastard of a thing to say, if you gamble and lose, its your own damn fault. Dont come crying to me when the house wins. I have absolutely no sympathy for gamblers.

^ settle down boys :D if he had a lesson to learn im pretty sure he learning it now.

lolz weezy, rather than buy the car back we could just send it there with damaged unwanted parts. eg stock gts seats in the gtr, rb20 etc. Theyll never suspect a thing.

Im gonna jump on the 'keen on parts' boat with Dan lol.

Unlucky to hear of your loss but thankfully you weren't injured.

+1

If its any consolation ... you could buy the wreck back and part it out. There'd be enough interest here to warrant it I would guess.

:):):O

why would you buy your own wreck back ??????? (its already his) :P

As I said earlier in my PM to you, its comments like these and the "why dont you have insurance" that have driven many of the original SAU members off the forums.

HINT - use you brains before you type. LOL

As far as I can see no one's come "crying to you when the house wins". A little bird once told me if you ain't got nothing nice to say then shut the f**k up! Nice of you to put the cliches and metaphors in there for those of us too retarded to understand your real issue tho.

    • Sadly I can confirm if you are actually seeking to drift, you will quite easily spin up one wheel. Even if you're going in a straight line. I am not entirely sure of the metrics/terminology here but there's only a certain amount that the helical will actually spin both wheels. I've seen it on video with my own car where two lines of smoke switch over to just one after you really get in to it. Unlike with a clutch diff where you can keep your foot planted until the car regains grip, in my experience with the helical you want to be utilizing traction control allowing LIMITED slip or lifting (partially) when you start to spin up both tyres with a Nissan helical. Which makes them pretty sub optimal for drifting duty. That said... this is probably a helical on numbers alone. Just put the Kazz in
    • Let's just fix the problem by f**king the rest of the gearbox.
    • Unlikely, as per Greg's post. This is not helical diff behaviour unless one wheel is up off the ground. Shimming what? You don't "shim" a mechanical LSD. Probably not in the sense that you have heard of people "shimming" a diff. And the process that Nissan f**kwits call "shimming" a diff involves super-preloading a VLSD cartridge against the side of the diff to create a friction/wear point (in a place that it wasn't supposed to have one) to make the sloppy, useless, viscous diff into a hybrid viscous/mech abortion. In case it isn't clear, I consider the process to be stupid. Nike.
    • How much does the shifter move when the car is in gear with the engine off? If it is more than about 1cm you need to replace your shifter bush. Your shifts will just get crunchier, not faster, with a short shifter unless you also rebuild the whole box
