Heads Up For Guys Getting Their Wheel Alignment Done

Hey guys 2 months ago I bought a pair of tyres for my R33 GTST from Tempe Tyres in Sydney. I got a pair of Kumho 255/40/17 KU31 tyres for $350 fitted and balanced. After purchasing the tyres, I requested for a wheel alignment and got quoted $70. I thought it was a decent price and went ahead with it.

2 months down the road, which is now, I realized my rear tyres (the KU 31s) were wearing out really quickly. It was down to about 60% tread. I was shocked as I had never been to the track, I don't thrash my car around doing burn outs and I travel only 20-30kms a day tops. A mate of mine who bought the exact same tyre as me just a week before I did still had heaps of tread left on his tyre.

So I brought my car to another tyre place to check my wheel alignment. When I was there, the alignment guy told me I had excessive toe in on my rear tyres which caused them to wear out prematurely. In fact, he found out that I had just over 20mm toe in in the rear tyres. When I found out, I was bloody pissed. I had paid $70 to get an alignment done at Tempe Tyres and this was the kinda shit alignment they gave me.

So to prevent all you fellow skyline owners from being in my position, this is a heads up for you guys. Go ahead and buy your tyres from Tempe Tyres.

JUST DO NOT GET AN ALIGNMENT THERE!!

I didn't know about the excessive toe in until I went to the other tyre place after which the guy fixed up for me. After I got the toe in corrected, I can't possibly go to Tempe Tyres and tell them, "Hey, you screwed up my alignment and I got it fixed by someone else." You know what I mean?

I mean, I really can't trust Tempe Tyres to do an alignment anymore.

Did you get a report from the other mob?

That will show Tempe that they botched the job. You never know man, they may do something to help out.

It's better than throwing your money away.

I never let ANY tyre shops do my wheel alignments. They are the roughest Bastards.

Years ago I had a Well known Tyre shop do an alignment on an XE Foulcan. I drove out feeling good but after driving over some potholed roads I noticed the steering position had changed. So pissed off I got the car up onto a hoist to discover they had stripped the eccentric camber bolt and it was moving freely..Well I went back their after Blood and the morons tried to tell me that the car was like that before they started...Bullshit artists

I had steering work plus alignment done by East coast suspensions in kirrawee ( streets away from Just Jap ) They did the best job I had ever done..So I dont really care that they are so far away .That is the only place I will go to.

I just dont get it with Sydney,

Almost impossible to find a reputable shop who can do a simple thing as a proper wheel align

The other mechanic I went to for a 2nd wheel alignment was using the old school system of light beams which aimed onto a chart. So he coudn't do a print out.

yeah i got mine balanced and aligned from a rim shop..tyres have last me about 2 months exact pretty much now i need a new pair..i have about 2-3mm of tread groove on them. then there gonna be semi slicks lol

i think i need a camber kit aswel though

LOL good one!

Is your car lowered? If so there is so much adjustament that can be done. Worse comes to worst and if your car IS lowered you need adjustable camber arms.

A cheaper option will be camber bushes.

      I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.

      Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.

      Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder

      Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
