hey guys

changed my oil and oil filter yesterday, and today i noticed a faint ticking noise at idle, but from what i can see, no under acceleration.

had the car 2 weeks now and i dont know what oil the past owner had in it.

it might be just me being all "think the worst thing possible"

ticvking doesnt sound like a klunk noise and its not very loud, at idle you must stand outside the car to hear it, but if you stand at the back of the car you can hear it our the exhaust.)

anywho the oil was royal purple 10w-40 and a k&n oil filter.

any ideas?!?

im soo hoping its not serious, ive only had car 2 weeks!!

also car does it at idle when warmed up, havent noticed if it does while warming...

will confirm later on this morning lol

will try to confirm also if it while clutch is out and if it does underacceleration...

for the moment but still open for ideas!

probably just the lifters... normal for the rb25det.... What oil were u using before?

just make sure its full (Around 4.5 litres) and you will be fine... You are using high quality oil...with the correct weights so i dont see a problem there.

Im sure others can confirm this..

I've been told this is a common thing for the RB's as well. Like previous poster said, just ensure you have the right amount of oil in all the time for safety's sake.

That's the same weight oil I have in my car, and mine's started doing it too, only in the last 400km's or so (been about 3500km since last change). I'll be trying a different brand oil this time and see if it helps. I've gotta get a logbook service done anyway probably in the next 3 weeks or so, so I'll get them to check it out while it's in the shop and report back.

ok... so car does it while at idle when warmed.

it will not do it while under power (tested in my garage) or warming up.

yeah i did an oil change and i unplugged then engine loom and got the starter motor kicking but so the car wouldnt turn over, so i could prime the oil pump without doing any damage.

check it after that and it was spot on "H"

so i shouldnt be worried about it?!?!

cheers that be awesome!!

hey guys

i just got home from my gfs house (yes the time is right)

and i noticed the ticking noise was louder...

im starting to get paranoid about this...

might be stupid but i put a full synthetic oil when i did the service, any chance thats whats doing it?

i also used the nulon oil get-ridd-er or whatever its called

also... ive noticed since the oil and filter change my oil pressure isnt as high as what it use to be on start up...

used to sit around 6 not sits about just above 4 (could this be the problem?)

"i also used the nulon oil get-ridd-er or whatever its called" - I'm assuming that is oil additive - Oil additive does shocking stuff, it actually breaks down the oil faster....

^^

agreed. Royal Purple states on its website you should NEVER add any additives to its oil.

I wouldnt use that stuff even on my daily.

If i was in your shoes i would be taking that stuff out and putting new stuff in.

I had the same noise after Service.... Agreed its the lifters.

I've Used different oil... slightly denser Viscosity and different brand, using new castrol 'Edge' just to see if this noise would go ... pretty sure its 15w .. noise made by lifters has gone cause of it.....

car has done over 100k.... so maybe due to the motor being more 'loose/worn' the higher viscosity oil has made this go away...

Just my opinion... could be wrong

the last owner would of had thicker oil in it... how many k's on your engine?

hey man, my odomter is just about to tick over 110,XXXkms

should i really do another oil change? money is now tight due to me doing one a couple of days ago.

also it seems like my car is loving royal purple, runs nice and smooth, revs nicely above 4/5000RPM.

that may also have been because the oil in it was sh** also lol

if it was me i would... maybe use a lower grade oil in the meantime. Royal purple is already a high quality well balanced oil. There is no need to add anything to it.

As for castrol edge.. i dont think that is fully synthetic... i think its a group III oil.

Mine does give a bit of tickiing noise.. but i wouldnt go over 10w for the cold weight.. and 40w would b ideal for hot weight.. however 50 may be ok...

any one can confirm this?

You definatley done your timing belt stuff too man?

You definatley done your timing belt stuff too man?

hey

yeah mate, theres a sticker in engine bay from when the car got the timing belt done, was at 98,xxxkms so should still be alright?

I have those stickers in my tool-box.

Adds $1500 to most imported with ordometers 90,000 to 110,000kms.

CHECK the timing belt and tensioner pulleys if you have not organised the timing belt yourself.

B.

hey guys

noticed tonight that the ticking goes away from idle after a moderate drive. bit of hitting boost rather than my not hitting it at all.

no/little boost = ticking at idle in other words...

any ideas?
