Hello chad bob,

I just spent about an hour reading this fascinating thread and was starting to think I was going to have to undertake a big clean up on my intake. Then I readlised you say this only applies to DD engines.

Am i safe to assume that my VQ25DET will be exempt from this problem?

How about my VQ37 VVEL?

Thanks

The VQ25DET and VQ37HR are not direct injected engines, so they won't suffer this issue, however, the intake can still get a bit grotty and a clean won't hurt.

It has nothing to do with direct injection or not, its the egr that pumps all that exhaust soot into the plenum.

A non egr motor will still go a little black due to exhaust coming back up the runner at valve overlap and the fact the pcv is dumping into the manifold.

The 'problem' the thread is referring to was the loss of performance by the intake getting clogged with oil and soot, this 'loss of performance' doesn't occur on non-DD engines, and the VQ25DET and VQ37HR are not DD engines..

However, the intake plennum does still get dirty.

Thinking about grabbing a can of Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner for my 300gt soon, anyone know if anything will go wrong if I decide to use it now (engines at 72,000kms) before my next service (79,000kms)? I've never used this seafoam stuff before. I just watched videos and read a few forums about spraying it into the vacuum hose etc

After seeing the amount of crap inside the plenum on the VQ25DD I have here, there is no way I would be letting any of it go down into the engine. I would be removing the entire plenum and runners and cleaning them properly with carby cleaner, off the car.

Be careful not to play with the throttle plate when you clean it, you may cause high idle problems.

^^ oh and what did people use to clean it all? ive found petrol, carb cleaner, degreaser all to be ineffective. hands are black now, thats about it

what about hi pressure cleaner? or steam cleaner?

when it comes to crud factor, i think im winning...

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
