Top job at the railway crossing/dip think you were one out of only three cars that kept it pinned through there and the only car that produced sparks :thumbsup:

Now the car has been in a big event, I thought I better post some findings about the car.

1) You need a decent sump! From the datalogs, the oil pressure will constantly drop into the 0-5psi range under heavy braking (cornering and acceleration forces don't bother it). It only does it for less than a second at a time, but as we found out, you're driving a time bomb.

2) Spending money on good shocks was worth every cent. We probably only tuned the car 70%-80% of what it could be, but the way the shocks handeled the big bumps really surprised me. Coming from the Bilsteins in the GT-R (which I was happy with), it was in another leage.

3) airbox and radiator worked like a dream. Intake temps were only 10-15deg above ambient. And the coolent never got above 85deg on a stage, you could see the thermostat opening and closing from the datalogs. As the temp woudl go from 85 down to 78, then back up to 85 2-3 times over a 30km stage.

4) Fancy dash was worth the money. The data from the logs was invaluable during the event, and I found the dash clear and easy to read during the stages. If you're racing you will spend just as much money on gauges as a dash.

5) ITB have plusses and minuses. They have given the same effect as bigger cams, with a loss of power down low, but it does keep the power going right to 8000rpm (and beyond if you had the turbo for it). I personly hate the throttle responce from the std 20, I think it makes gear changes slower (waiting for the engine to rev down so the box will engage the next gear), and it makes the engine feel like it's attached directly to your foot. I'm going to try some cam gears, and hopfully that will give me some responce back..... but if I didn't need to drop the rev's back to 7000rpm from 8000rpm, I don't think it would have been as much of an issue. I don't think I'd recomend it for other people, but I personly think they improved the entire package.

6) catch can design needs more thought than just hooking a single tank up. Constant high rpm needs oil restrictors, oil air separator, thicker oil, and a return to the sump.

I'm suprised re the oil surge Benny. Mine did about 10,000klm of competetive driving before a big end went, but I'm blaming that on running 30 odd 100% pace laps in a Qld summer without an oil cooler! lol

Do.did you run a litre overfull?

I run it to the top of the hump of the dip stick, I think it's about a litre if not more. It seems all 20's will eventually run a bearing, just not as soon as mine.

We pulled the engine down last night, and bearing 3 was the one that died.

Yeah ABS works well, it's 4 channel unit out of a VY Commodore with traction control (tc isn't hooked up though). Idely it'd be nicer if it was slightly less sensitive, but you only really notice that on a circuit.

This nissan flag poped up at least once every day during the event and was usualy acompanied with a toot of the horn and a bit of drift.

I've got a new high responce bottom end ready to go. Just need to bash some restrictors into it, and sort a sump out. ASR looks the go for the sump.

    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.

Lived in a country where you could actually do this and drive it legally on the road Sadly, neither applies to me As for the turbo, I am having second thoughts, mainly for engineering/registration legality reasons and insurance  Not saying I've finished doing stupid things that I probably should do to the MX5, but boost, and V8 engine swaps isn't on the cards Strange, but true

    • Yes shipping here can be a pain, was about to purchase timing belt replacement kit, but it tends to get expensive due to shipping (and customs if importing from non-EU which the UK now falls under).
