Just bought a mint R32 GTR... And probs like everyone else excited to start modifying it... BUT after reading a few hours worth of forum material about ppl gettin defected, getting picked on by the cops for driving an import etc.... Im starting to think is it really worth it... Spending all this money >8-9K to have the cops defect you a week later and then having to spend just as much to take all the parts off, then put it back on again.... Do the cops really give import drivers a hard time here in Melbourne like it seems to be put out here on the forum... Will they give me trouble in my clean GTR ?? All of this has killed my initial excitment of buying the car...What do you guys think ??

meh, half the guys who post on here about getting defected attract attention by doing stupid shit or being in the wrong place. The other half are just a pack of whinging bitches that need to man up and cop one on the chin once in a while.

at the end of the day if you drive sensibly, and have a roadworthy car, then the police won't pick on you, and even if they did, they wouldn't have much to get you for. I've found they generally leave standard looking GTR's well alone as they're generally driven by older guys who are off their P's. The type that own the car for a more deeper reason than "it can chop my habib's VL" or "it does hektik skids".

If you're sporting a massing wing, a skittles coloured paintjob, neons or 22" chromies, then you're pretty much asking to be pulled over.

i Disagree, My mate has a r34 gt-t, Very attractive (looks awsome) and he has never been stoped by a cop apart from a breathalizer test but they were testing everyone so no not really. But he never speeds or does stupid things, just drives normaly. If they see you fooling around then they might keep an eye on you and stop you every now and then.

Totally agree.

Agreed with funkymonkey..

Many times, I've had police drive up behind me and I get myself ready for the lights to come on.. then they just go around me.

If you're driving sensibly and don't have anything ridiculously noticable on your car which could be defected, then as mentioned, they tend to think you're a more mature person driving the car with a passion rather than a hoon.

Yup like everyone on here says, behave like a tool & you'll sure as s#$t get treated like one. Possessing a high profile high performance vehicle is a big responsibility & that is all. Enjoy it for what it is, drive within the law, if you must get up it occaisionally, take it to driver training/track days & have fun.

My 2c.

Cheers GW

That's the best explanation of how to go about things I've read on this forum, nice one.

On the mod thing, don't start chucking standard stuff away until you know (objectively, on a dyno for instance) it's past it's engineering tolerance. The standard R32 air box is a classic mistake everyone makes. PODS are unnecessary unless you are over 380-400 RWKW, and you have the added bonus of a standard looking engine bay.

had my skyline for 3.5 years now - never been stopped.

Sure its not as modded up, but things like gauges etc is defectable due to their positioning - but the car looks stock outside (only thing the cops could see is the exhaust, and thats a quiet one anyway)

I agree with what has been posted...but i also agree they are getting much tougher on imports.

I've owned my gtst for 7 years, and for the first 6 i was never pulled over. I even drove it between workshops in a very untidy state when it was in the build process, but never had any problems.

However...this year alone, i have been pulled over 6 times. (4 if you don't count the two RBT's). And in those 4 times, twice I've had to open my bonnet and the other two times it was just for a chat and looksee. I don't think I have anything unroadworthy but it sucks being pulled over cause you have a headturner. Just be sensible and don't do anything stupid like airbrushing like i did hahaha

yeah i strongly agree with funkey and shanus. im still on P's being 19 only but i do somewhat stick to the laws like i didnt go out and buy a turbo skyline but i have visually modded it alot inside and out and i do cop alot of attention but overall i rarely get dicked because its not like i drive past a cop sideways etc all that crap. it really depends where you are as different area have different cops with attitudes or what not, some even just dont like imports but you get that i guess. ive had some real bad cops who try to 'ground' my car just because of the way it looks but i guess its attention im ready to cop. you should honestly be fine with your gtr stock just dont go crazy in it on the roads and your fine lmao

Funky is about right on this.

My logic:

It comes down to the area, the time, how you drive and how the car looks/sounds.

I used to drive a fairly stock looking Evo VII every day (35,000kms in a year) and passed more Police than I can remember. A few looked but no one ever pulled me up. It was modified but nothing obscene (exhaust, AVCR, springs), also had a very dark tint from Japan. I hardly ever drove the car at night as I was driving all day and the last thing I wanted to do of an evening was get back in it!

I then got a grey 8MR which was extensively modified and again wasn't pulled over as it was driven only short distances during the week in the daytime. The guy that purchased it from me only drives it weekends but was unlucky enough after 3 weeks of ownership to be pulled over leaving a servo and defected. That was a case of the wrong place, wrong time sadly.

If you have a massively modified car, drive it through areas we all know to keep away from and draw attention to yourself, odds are you will be pulled over.

Keep it sensible if you plan on everyday use or spend big on it for limited kms at weekends/track days. All about the risk ratio :)

You can still modify the car for street use, just stick to the legal mods.

You can change to twin air pods as you are allowed to have 1 intake mod or just stick to the stock air box and upgrade the panel filter if you want.

GTR front mount intercoolers are good for over 300kW's so no need to change.

Exhaust you can have just not too loud and make sure it's not too low.

Wheels you can go 2" bigger then stock.

You can lower the car, as lowest ride height is 100mm.

Just don't do any stupid shit and drive sensibly and you will be fine.

WOAH, within 12 hours and you've got everything sorted.

I'm like you at start. I didnt know about all these defectable items until I BOUGHT the car and start talking to people and asking questions (didnt even know carbon bonnet is defectable, but they dont really get you for that). Anyway Dont do stupid things and have any attention seeking mods, and you'll be fine. I've been pulled over once since I bought the car (bought in March this year) and thats just a normal rbt check (wrong place wrong time, thats what I think). Saw my ring with my wife and they didnt bother with me. Have fun with your GTR in a sensible way and you'll be very happy that you did buy her!

Don't worry, as everyone has said. Drive sensibly and you generally won't be defected, unless you have an obviously defectable exterior eg., neons, massive polished intercooler piping, ride height, huge sharp metal GT wing, etc.

The things that attract attention under the hood are gigantic top-mount turbos, enormous pipe-organ air pipes and chromed engine covers with HKS 2.8L scrawled across it, etc. Keep it simple and you should be fine.

That's bullshit Shan, mate you've been in QLD for too long you long haired hippy.

Yes it really is that bad in some areas. They know the cars and love to pull them over. If you're pulled over by the right kind of TMU and you have mods, they will find them trust me. I never drove like a cock and I got pulled over many times but it saying that, I'm south east suburbs. Apparently the cops are not as bad up in the West and North but those areas are pretty dumpy anyhow so they brobably don't bother :) (joke)

I pretty much agree with everything that's been said - don't be an idiot and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Yes, you're gonna get more attention than if you drove a little Corolla - but if you keep the mods discreet (i.e. no massive loud exhaust, neons, other 'bling', etc) and you're not on P's, you shouldn't be too unlucky.

When I was on P's, in my practically stock N/A 33, I would get pulled up all the time ("RBT" of course... pfft!) - never actually even accused of doing anything wrong (i.e. speeding or skids or whatever) but mainly the cops just wanting to check the power/weight issue (i.e. looking under the bonnet for a turbo) and try to defect the car on principle - just to get it off the road I guess (got 2 canaries in about 2 years... once my rear tyres were a little on the baldish side - fair enough, the other time because my aftermarket steering wheel "didn't have enough padding").

Since I got off my P's, I've only been pulled up twice - once because my rego had expired the day before (my bad, just happened to get a certain well-known import-hating copper from the Knox area, so no warning for me! :D) and another time because I overtook an undercover cop (again, my bad!). I've got a FMIC, zorst, etc but I don't drive like a moron and I've not had any real trouble with the boys in blue. Doesn't mean I don't get nervous if I'm ever being followed by one though!
