I'm sure most of you know about this, but 53 new speed cameras are going to be installed starting tomorrow. Not sure where the locations will be yet. I can't believe some cameras are still wet-film.

Personally, I welcome combined speed/red light cameras at busy city intersections because they likely do reduce the road toll, though hidden mobile speed cameras on dead-straight rural freeways is another question. However, the accuracy of the speed cameras and more importantly the threshold for leniency (eg., 10% ADR speedo accuracy variance) should be adjusted.

Pure revenue raising, the figures that they use from last year showing a reduction on road deaths are flawed, as it does not take into account the decrease in road use at the same time due to the higher costs of fuel.

Here's another tidbit that I heard today, the camera's on Eastlink where budgeted to raise $62.5million p/a, however, they have only raised just under $750,000, so there is a budgeted (yes, speed camera revenue has it's own revenue line in the state budget) lose from those camera's of $61.75million. These new camera's are budgeted to raise around $60million p/a, coincidence?

That is gold :)

I use Eastlink every day. Motorists sit on 120, all brake for the camera's then speed back up to 120. I am seeing a few more Police down the Frankston end though which unusual as Eastlink is mostly unpatrolled from what I see.

As for Speed/red light cameras I also don't mind them so much, people who run red lights shit me. I think running a red light is much more dangerous than just plain speeding.

The minister said on TV news last night it would be like a whole bunch of extra police out on the roads.

Funny, I don't recall the last time a camera pulled me up and said "listen sunshine, you've been speeding. behave yourself and slow down before you hurt someone".

Pure revenue raising!
