Hey guys & girls,

cracked my gearbox near the drain plug and was talking to a mate at work today who said there was some liquid stuff that acted like a weld and was good to a few hundred degrees, any ideas what it is/what it's called? is it any good? where can i get it?I was thinking of getting the crack welded up, not sure what would be a better fix.

a pic of the damage :D

i also found this tooth when i changed the oil in the gearbox, is it a syncro tooth or a gear tooth?

I assume it has been there a while as i haven't noticed any difference in the gears since i have owned the car.

Thanks Luke

I reckon your mate is thinking of chemiweld and its used for a mildly cracked head on a boonga not a skylines gear box, sump plug looks a little worse for wear, if its not leaking oil i would leave it and get a new mechanic because who ever butchered that plug im guessing caused the crack

I have no idea about the tooth just drive easy and take note of strange noises

yeah the problem is it that the gearbox is leaking. That was how i found the bolt when i went to change the gearbox oil, it was definately over tightened i tried for about 10mins with a breaker bar before it came loose, i think i manged to pull every muscle in my arms, back and neck getting it undone, as well as burning myself countless times on the exaust.

I'd say it looks like a gear tooth. How much oil is it dropping? To weld it up you'll have to drop your gearbox oil again, weld then refill and hope the weld takes. Other option, if its only weaping a bit is to clean the cracked area with wax and grease remover, give it a light sand then put a smear os Sikaflex over the crack.

Oh and i'd be getting a new drain plug to, that one is well mangled

only discovered the crack once i had changed the oil. i think i may have put the crack in there when i took the plug out. :D

the only place in Whyalla that might weld it up say that they will probably want me to remove the gearbox, does anyone know anywhere in adelaide that will do it with the gearbox still in the car?

there is a putty that sets like a weld that may do the job considering it with stands heat and the sump isnt under pressure, note to ppl dont over tighten your sump nut!

Totally forgot about that! Devcon Steel Putty is the stuff, pretty sure they do one for aluminium too. Try a good hardware or industrial supplies store, they should have it

I think i might try some of the Devcon Steel Putty until i get it welded up, going to Rapid steel Fabrication 2nite to see how much they want to do it. Was Talking to one of my mates about it and he was saying you really need to weld it up from the inside, it that really nesecary?

Dose any1 know where i can get a new (or good second hand) plug from, i was thinking NissWreck or Adelaide Jap.

The steel putty I use goes rock hard when used, but can go soft again with heat. Be careful using it.

i used som liquid weld stuff last nite, yet to fill it with oil, will only be a temp fix getting a mate to weld it up on the 1st August. hopefully it holds till then. The stuff i brought is ment to be good to 800 degrees and is designed for use in and around engines, so i should be OK for a gearbox.

sorry to bring an old thread up, but where would i be able to get a new gearbox oil sump plug from? As mine is worn off ... Do you guys think OEM nissan would have one? Thanks.

any wrecker with imports in their yard would have them. Nissan would certainly have them, but far more expensive.

go to nisswreck, japanese import spares or JMS - one of those 3 should sort u out

when i got my gearbox weled and re-tapped my mate put an engine one in instead, said it was stronger. not sure if it would be a straigt swap tho.

How much did it cost to get it welded? i have the same problem on one of mine

This is an old thread you brought back from the grave.

You can ask this kind of question in the wasteland thread, or check the Yellow Pages for any alloy welders (head work etc) that can do the job.

:)

At least the guy is searching the forum!

Can't win.

Well said. People need to relax when an old thread gets bumped - its there for a reason
