Due to a cock up my engine let go on the way to getting it tuned today and i now have to rebuild the bottom end. Im struggling to find suppliers for RB20 parts mainly decent pistons.

Just wondering for those of you out there that have rebuilt the bottom end who have you purchased your gear through???

Any help much appreciated

Cheers Ben

Precision international

Nason engine parts

Performance wholesale

Thanks Trent, i've already spoken to Matt from Precision International and they can only supply custom made parts so rules them out. I haven't been able to get onto the Nason site and waiting to hear back from Performance Wholesales.

See Performance Wholesale about ROSS Racing pistons. They do them for RB20 and are a great piston. They come with Mahle rings so an overall good package

Will do Dan, im hoping to get away with rebuilding it for around the 3k mark :D

They can make a set for you.

$1500+ as a minimum to make custom pistons so would rather look at a ready to go option from ACL, CP etc to try and help keep costs down.

you can get these from Repco.....good price too

Looking into the ACL pistons at the moment, will hit up local Repco for pricing though.

Why not just buy a wrecker motor with warranty and put a new water pump, oil pump and belts.idler / tensioner etc on it. All up it will be less then 2k for something that will be pretty reliable.

I was thinking about buying a long motor again and swapping everything over but you never really know what your getting, $1200+ (excluding freight) for an engine so it would be more than 2k by the time i buy everything else, freight it here and im still unsure on how many k's is on the motor, how hard a life its had and amount of boost its seen.

The car has been off the road for over 3years and i've spent ALOT of money on it already, this is the second engine that has let go and so far i've driven it less than 100k's on both of them. This was my own stupid fault and cant blame anyone but myself but id rather rebuild the bottom end so i know its all fresh, tune it up and re advertise the car and chalk it up as another experience.

Can i ask, how did it break? or more to the point.....what caused it to break?

I lent my PFC to a mate to use in his car for a hill climb but they kept having trouble with it and it wouldn't save any changes. In the end he decided not to use it and i put it back in my car (wasn't currently driving it as it wasn't registered) i took the car to get a rego inspection (had a base tune on it when the cams were run in) so it was just drivable off boost.

Unfortunately it appears it had saved changes as the injector setting were set back to stock (im running 555's) so it leaned out and went POP. Haven't pulled the engine out yet as it only happened yesterday but at a guess its a cracked/melted piston or broken ring land. Either way its FUBAR and im back to where i started 3 years ago with the car off the road with a blown motor :)

Umm, if your settings were back to base map and you have 555cc injectors, then it would run rich, not lean.

What exactly is the problem? Missfire?

Could have just fouled a plug. You would have had to be hammering the f**k out of it to melt a piston with a lean out. If you were running the engine in, then I would have to ask...why?

Its a pure smoke machine that has a nice knock on start up, its well and truly FUBAR, I wish it was just a fouled plug!!! I wasn't giving the car a hard time and never hit boost in it the handful of times i've driven it as it wasn't tuned 100%. It had a pretty aggressive tune on it so im told and wouldn't of taken much to do the damage that it has done.

It was a stock RB20 that i dropped cams, cam gears, injectors etc into with a base tune to get the car running again for rego.

Either way the engine is gone and it leaves me with a car i can't drive/sell the way it is again and this is the second time so im a little over cars at the moment!!!

kriss on NS.com i think it was had an rb20det for 500bux. in melbourne.

i know someone with an RB24 for 2.5k then sell your cams and you are down to around the 2k mark. or you could have a fresh stocker for the 3k mark as you said.

Try EKW in Melbourne. Been in business a long time, and my engine off them is perfect after 4 years of use/abuse.

They dont buy locally, they only wreck std cars in Japan which have been compression tested off the starter motor and had the sumps removed for inspection. The motor cost me $600 and i swapped over manifolds and pumps etc off my old motor as they were a known qty.

They come with start up warranty, and i think its well worth a phone call. Tell them you dont want the loom, turbo, manifolds, CAS etc.

Real sorry to read about the dead motor :D
