Kristan
Hi guys, I'm getting a bit bored of my current job, where I live and just life in general at the moment so was thinkin of moving back to WA. I was born an Aussie, though haven't been back for getting on 20 years now (I'm 31) and was wondering what the place is like these days. Especially for a GTR owner who likes his modding and cars. I was also wondering what the job situation is like. I'm currently a COO for am ISP, so am pretty technically minded as well as having good management skills. I was thinking of a change in direction though, perhaps into something to do with cars.. Assuming I sold up and moved over, I'd be in the fairly luxurious position of having a bit of cash in the bank, not needing to get a job straight away and could live with friends/relatives for a while. My current plan is to come over August/September time for a week or two's holiday, maybe see some properties, some recruitment agencies etc. to try to get a feel for the place. I guess the main thing I'm asking is - does this make sense, and what advice can you give? Cheers, Kristan (also Kristan on the gtroc in case anyone visits there!) GTS-t VSPEC
Hi mate, I'm originally from the UK, and have now lived most of my life in Western Australia, and I must admit there aren't too many places I'd rather live. Whilst we're no-where near as big and exciting as our Eastern States, I reckon we have one of the best lifestyles here. Job prospects in WA are good, but obviously with the GFC things are a bit harder to get a good job. If you're here later in the year then I'm sure some of the Skyline crew will happily show you a few things. fire_angel
WA is great, and what it lacks for in excitement it definitely makes up for in lifestyle! housing is ridiculously priced though.... 2LV8ETR
wondering what the place is like these days. Especially for a GTR owner who likes his modding and cars. This will be the only downfall. With hoon legislation the way it is, modified vehicle owners are a target for police. As long as you stay under the radar and leave your anger at the tracks, you should be okay but on occasion you'll still get hassled by the odd cop with a defect notice. MOT laws will no doubt be different to ours over here so I don't know how you'll go if you were intending on shipping your GT-R over here. In any event, a little research on your behalf once you're over here on your visit will tell you what you may need to know. Good luck with the venture. bubba
AFAIK if you have owned the car for 12 months in the country you are coming from (and can prove so) you can bring it in as a private import and avoid the compliancing process. syfon
Noooooooo don't come here, Perth is a hole! I've lived here all my life and love it Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/279322-coming-back-to-wa/#findComment-4718353 Share on other sites
Kristan
Wow, thanks for all the replies guys! I was curious as to what the coppers are like regarding cars. I do live in somewhat of a paradise for that at the moment - no regular MOT/checks, no national speed limit, plus some of the public roads are maintained for for racing (I'm on the Isle of Man in case anyone is wondering). Having said that, I'd exchange it for some decent tracks. There's only one over here and it's more like a gravel car park than a track. Not somewhere to take your car if you like your paintwork! Are there a good set of tracks in WA, reasonably priced, well run etc.? I'll keep an eye on the boards here a bit more and do a bit more research. Don't suppose anyone has flown to/from Europe recently and can recommend (or have advice on who to avoid) when it comes to airlines? I'm rather tall, and long haul flights tend to be less fun and more an exercise in contortion. Thanks again guys Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/279322-coming-back-to-wa/#findComment-4718404 Share on other sites
2LV8ETR
I'm on the Isle of Man in case anyone is wondering. Ahhhhh. That's a driver's paradise! Are there a good set of tracks in WA, reasonably priced, well run etc.? In the Perth metro area, the only one that's fairly accessible is Barbagallo's on tuner days, but you'll need a CAMS license to use it. Don't suppose anyone has flown to/from Europe recently and can recommend (or have advice on who to avoid) when it comes to airlines? I'm rather tall, and long haul flights tend to be less fun and more an exercise in contortion. I used Singapore Airlines recently to France for 20/4 hours, and that was very uncomfortable in economy, and I'm 6ft (182cm) tall. Public Enemy
Emirates would be your best bet. London to Dubai, get off for a smoke and then to Perth. Don't use Qantas. fire_angel
Definitely don't go Qantas! Emirates and Singapore are good and you can request the emergency door seats (although then you can't recline as much) which gives you more leg room. I flew Singapore to LA (21hrs) with a one hour stopover in Narita and was so glad I swapped to a emergency door seat for the extra leg room. Isle of Man is awesome! the roads there are nothing like Perth.
