has anyone ever frout mounted the stock cooler b4??? lol

youd hope no-one wasted thier time.

no point running 12-13psi. The stock turbo makes little to no extra power over 10psi, at a cost of the turbos life.

I seriously reckon it's a waste of time. I'm running an r34 gtt cooler in my car. the work to change them, as well as the cost, is just not worth it.

You get a small improvement, for a bigger time and money cost than it's worth. Save up and buy a front mount.

Really - thanks for the tip. Might forget it then! I was possibly going to up the boost to 10psi and I thought this might be a safer way. I dont want a front mount though.

Anybody know what the pressure drop across the 2 coolers is or intake temps...to compare

it took me less than 30mins to install the R34 cooler, i squeaked it in without removing the front bar so if you need to remove the bar then this will add to the time and hassle. i just stuck it up on a set of ramps.

certainly given the price of FMIC's the cost advantage has narrowed (but cost of pipework remains an issue) if you are looking for a cheap DIY mod then this is ok, at the right price.

with a standard turbo that doesn't love being pushed much beyond 12psi, spending $800 on a FMIC and pipework (+ labour to install??) vs R34 IC and running between 10-12psi for possibly $150ish you will be slightly behind on longer applications of wide open throttle (WOT), around town i bet it makes stuff all difference which IC. arguably the response it better with the smaller IC.

at higher boost the pressure drop across the nissan IC's is significant.

i measured inlet temps at the plenum and they remained controlled for street driving, not as good as a FMIC but ok.

if you are going to upgrade the turbo then don't muck around buy a FMIC, if you are going to keep the factory one this modification is a reasonable option.

I bought Georges cooler off him (thanks mate) and my car went from 156kw atw to 165 with no other changes. Then we put the boost up to 10psi and got 190atw so I am of the opinion that it is a great mod for the price. I will say that my stock cooler was a bit damaged so that may have something to do with the difference. As wolverine said, for 30 minutes work and 150 bucks I cant think of much better.

i cut out the plastic wheelarch guard and riveted stainless mesh in its place.

if you have the factory plastic scoop on your existing cooler bolt it on the R34 IC this will ensure that all the air goes thru the cooler. i had to fabricate one out of sheet aluminium on mine to keep the efficiency up.

if the scoop doesn't fit then modify it or spend an hour or two making something with 0.6mm aluminium. (aluminium shops occasionally let you scab an offcut or two).

i have never heard of anyone having a rock thrown up......but why not mesh it?? takes no time to do and solves the problem.

It sure was, i never got to use it. wolverine's setup was really professional on his r33, it looked like it was extremely efficient. also a top bloke.

Hi guys, based on my experience, r34 cooler fits fine with plastic guard although its a bit tight (the plastic guard makes contact on the bottom of the cooler). I found that the guard wont sit exactly flush with the guard; the guard will bend out o little bit, but if you use the plastic button things to fasten it on, it will be fine.

Fellars, i'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Doing a dyno, I got an extra 4 kw. but that could be anything - better fuel, cooler day, different dyno etc. the increase in size is negligible. Compare this to fmic where people gain 20 kw - now that's obvious where the gain is from.

think about the cost - new fmic available for 220 in for sale section. piping from diy section using silicon fixtures - 250. that makes a fmic installed for 470. why would you spend 100-150 for an r34 gtt cooler?

even if you sell your stocko one, they go for like $50. Hardly worth the trouble.

to do it properly, you have to take the front bar off. I could slip the cooler in, but not the air duct. had to take the bar off.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
