fair enough, but what if some one does up the exel, lancer what ever and it looks the goods but still is mech standed, whos to say its not fast enough madey the single cam 1.8 is to much power for them so the just want to make it look good. There has to be some sort of respect to some one that can turn a standed mums shopping trolley into some thing that he can cuze with pride, dont you think. Like you park a standed r34 GTR and a standed exel side buy side with ones going to get more atention. But then you spend the remaning $90,000 on the exel then which one will people like more.

$90k Excel vs Standard R34 GTR? R34 FTW!!! EVEN IF IT WAS A GTT!!

You know the funniest thing Ive seen done to an excel is a bonnet scoop, due to further inspection of it I relised that its not even part of the bonnet its actually glued on ;) if thats not rice then I dunno what rice is ;) .

"Rice" is one of those over-used terms, back in my day it was the harley owners bagging out jap bikes (lol) and eventually wandered over into the 4-wheel world where its stuck like shit too a blanket, but hey cant expect anything real original I 'spose.

Theres nothing wrong with making your car look good, even if its a hunk of poo in someone elses eyes, shine up the shiny bits, patch in something colourful where it was stock-grey and make it look all tidy and mechanically cool. Its hot-rodding.

Women have botox, plastic surgery and titty implants, men do up cars.... mmm titties...

Anyway,

What 'looks good' is an extremely subjective thing.

Most people dont have any clue about what actually looks good, but they know what they like and hence some of the 'fashion disasters' of the automotive industry and private vehicle ownership.

What people like, is not always good looking... sometimes theres a general consensus amongst a group of people what they like, even if it looks like a dogs rectum and hence the nightmare begins.

Basically, there is no rice, there is just what looks good on the vehicle and there is what looks like shit.

-neons

-altezzas

-overboard stickiers

-massive exhaust tip

-monster tacho

-wide ass kits

-fugly kits

-cheap performance parts

ummm... there's no such thing as a JDM tyte Honda in Australia, they're almost all domestics (with the exception of the Hybrid cars, but they're hardly the pinnacle of style or power).

JDM means Japanese Domestic Market (ie a car sold originally in Japan). You can't import any honda's yet (you'll be able to import the EK9 Civic Type R soon once compliance workshops can comply them).

Until then, enjoy lookin out for those clean, good AUDM honda's.

I suppose I'll add my 2 c

To me any modification to a vehicle needs to have a purpose. In particular exterior modification such as any kind of aero kit, exhaust, scoops and suspension mods. This purpose should have something to do with improving the performance or safety of the vehicle.

If instead it is merely adding weight or trying to deceive, then in my opinion it is Rice.

Now I know that some people talk about the 'look' of a car and that aero etc can improve this. Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose but unless your aero actually does something, I'd still call it Rice. (BTW Rice can look extremely clean and beautiful - although rarely - look up the Top Gear 'Carbage' site for examples ;-)

Particular bugbears of mine are:

Standard Lancers with EVO body kits, Excels with big Aero, GTR front bars on non GTR Skylines, Stickers for equipment not actually fitted to the vehicle, bad fibreglass on anything and 'spinners' on the wheels.

But heck - as long as I don't have to drive it - knock yourself out.

i dunno wats so bad about having a GTR front bar on a GTST?? wat if u cant afford and/or maintain a GTR yet u wud like your GTST to impress u by looking LIKE a GTR not to mention the aero gains over the GTST bar?? i think its ok as long as its done properly y not??

Yeah, but for the love of god, think of all the homeless young tacho's that have a tin roof over their head thanks too bogans in slow cars thinking they want too go fast.

I mean, if it wasnt for some knuckle dragger strapping it too a 'yundi, commo or falcon they'd only find maybe 100 genuine homes for the poor things a year and its a good home too. They'll never be worked more than 40-50% of their capacity if theyre even hooked up at all.

  • 2 years later...

i understood "rice boy" to be a racist term

this was because the smaller cars made within aisial provinces and imported into typical western society were driven by people of asian ethnicity.

this "rice boy" is linked to the fact the asian made cars did not have the power of typical jags, mustangs, or holdens within western civilisation.

migrant families often bought a car on its economical principles as opposed to sheer power and fuel consumption/performance/status

as the migrant families expanded the children acquired the vehicle from the parents and in order to fit into western society expressed their individuality through the "customisation" of their small capacity vehicles which involves such "upgrades" to infer that the car was indeed faster than it appeared.

the word "rice" does not referr to the car being driven on a packet of rice and "burning" it to power the car, instead (no offence) refers to the racist term of a person of asian descendant being a "rice picker"

"Boy" was also a racis term developed toward african americans in the slave days where a black servant was referred to as a "boy"

hence how the wording of "rice boy" came about and attached itself to people pf asian appearence driving asian small capacity cars with modifications to express its capibilities of speed

if you owned a "muscle car" you were typically white and far better off in comparison

decades later the term ricer is under a different meaning as rice still referred as a car made in asia, with in most cases outlandish style design - these cars are now driven usually by "younger" drivers who are limited in mechanical now how and can not afford engine upgrades, but are able to stick on a graphic

then we go into development of asian vehicles to match power and reliability of the western vehicles and stigmas attached to each - roll this into the last decade of modern society and you get to the definition of what today is a ricer boy.

this now extends to any car which styiling means more then performance.

pity it extends back to the days of racial inequality.

but hey i could be wrong = it has happened before

(i dont mean to offend)

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
