Hey guys i am coming to the end of my rb30 build and now just need to make the decision about what to use.

Would like to hear from people about their experience with them? I am also open to any other recommendations? (am in nz as well)

yea thats a fair point . I have had a quote from st hitech and they a few things. Engine specs (who i did my bottom end with) have recommed a tuner who is good with link. also on the cards is a second hand Autronic SM4 this was my engine buliders and is pretty new.

Id go the Link...i had an Autronic SM4 in my GTR and it didn't impress. I upgraded to a Vi-PEC V88 which is basicly what Link releases as the G4 Storm. Its a great product and if your car is a street car the driveability is second to none. My GTR is a drag car that is still road registered but before the V88 was a pig to drive on the road...now i enjoy cruising...it runs like a dream.

....which points to your tuner not knowing how to set-up the autronic. I run an sm4 and have no driveability issues whatsoever, no stalling, starts first crank warm or cold, no stutters or breakdowns and thats with very little dyno time.

i run massive cams, big twin lowmounts (now big single), 100mm throttle body, big single entry plenum etc...whats your set up?...i had this same problem using even the much fabled Power FC...my tuners are the best in the business in this country and have done many Autronics. To get my car to run right i needed an ECU with superb engine control (crank trigger, idle control etc)...i have this now.

or i might have just been unlucky with the ecu i was supplied as the new owner i sold it to had to send it back to Autronic to get fixed.

That does sound more likely, as im sure the autronic cant be that bad relative to the vipec. I mean the only bit that would really effect the drivability would be the cams and to some degree the tps mapping although i think thats pretty much sorted as autronic have been doing it for years.

So you've converted to crank trigger, how does this affect driveability? Single tb makes life a little easier for map sensored cars yes?

The so called best dont always get it right.

So the microtech is out of the question? i had a chat to the tuner today and he said that he had read up on the sm4 and would be more than happy to tune it! but it is second hand (not very old) but i have been told that you want a warrenty like anything somthing could go wrong. I am looking towards the link now (v88)

you wont be disappointed.

Ash as good as Ben is...Jim Souvas is just as good a tuner and has twice as much tuning experience as him. There are some set-ups that cannot be perfected with a basic ECU.

I love autronics and motec's great as wheel chocks !

shal we just change this forums to the "You can't make more than 50 hp without a Vipec?

I think i might need to strap a GT55 to the side of my engine and show you how a "basic" ecu can control it perfectly!

Ah what a predictable thread.

Some quite well known members on here have recently done some shonky deals with popular ECU's, two spring to mind involving PFC's. Its wrong to write an ECU off the list because someone says anything remotely negative about them (and just so happen to NOT be sponsored by that brand, or have a different one currently for sale.

At the end of the day, its up to your tuner. Use whatever he feels confident in giving you the best result from your setup.

It is smart though to think long and hard about what you'll use in the future (motor changes, turbo changes, gearbox changes etc) and get something that caters to those needs, eg if you're getting a dogbox in the future you may aswel get an ECU that supports flatshift for example

There is NOTHING wrong with a microtech. My guy tuned it up in 45mins flat, did the AC idle up, cold start etc, and got a nice result which was nice and drivable.

Of course its not as good as a vipec, afterall, nothing is (note the extreme use of sarcasm in this line). :)

great point, which can be equally applied to ANY mods. I have fallen over here numerous times ;).

SS8...it sucks spending money many times over as you slowly build up your car to each level...ive done it that way...sounds like you have done this too. Spending a bit extra the 1st time will in the end save you money.

Vi-PEC was released 3 months before Link...however they are a very similar product...we have tested a few things with each brand and have confirmed they are not identical. None of the Vi-PEC upgrades/fixes and additional software (V-logger for example) are available if you have a Link ecu. They are both an excellent top-end ecu at a great price.

Thats because i dont want any personal experience with a vipec :)

Anyway back on topic (as vipec was never in this discussion), speak to your tuner and ask him - easy :)

What about the ultimate street/circuit setup? The one thats run off a PFC? :)

Its truely mental...and i thought our torque curve was fat and flat. Its the ultimate circuit/street engine set-up.
I went for a drive up Mt Dandenong....its mental!

not as scary as mine as the power delivery is so linear and smooth but all you have to do is look at the speedo every now and then to frighten the life out of you.

Ash that car is more than a simple silver box...is it not ? Poor example...but nice shovel work.

to the OP, how many tuner options do you have? and are there some really well known ones that you're willing to travel a bit to get to that might be able to offer a lot more ECU options for you?
