hey guys i obtained my p's before july 01 2007

now i found this on vic roads. can someone please explain what the engine capacity bit means and if i can drive a r33 gts-t?

High powered vehicle restrictions that apply if you obtained your probationary licence before 1 July 2007
Drivers who were issued a probationary licence prior to 1 July 2007 may drive a vehicle if it is not a high powered vehicle as defined by either definition. If a vehicle is defined as high powered under one definition but not the other, it may be driven.

Definition of a high powered vehicle (prior to 1 July 2007)

  • a power to mass ratio which exceeds 125 kilowatts per tonne; or
  • an engine capacity which exceeds 3.5 litres per tonne of the unladen mass (tare) of the motor vehicle

dont know how to use the search, but thanks for the useful info you put into the thread.

Man, all Im saying is that theres a button up in the top right hand side of your screen it says "search". click on it, type in "p plate laws" or something relating to what you wanna know and Im sure a thread will come up answering your question. dont talk to me like Im ruining your thread, Im just saying it doesnt need to be made if theres already others answering your question.

hope this helps.

and btw, you cannot drive a gtst-t on your P's, but a gts is fine. I had one on my P's but was lucky enough to never have been pulled over.

Gtst-t's are considered high powered and cops arent the biggest fans of P-platers with turbo cars

just spoke to the police and vic roads, the R33 has 132kw/tonne...all i need to do is add 110KG and it passes im 90kg..so just add heavier rims and i pass and the officer said i wont get introuble at all because it becomes legal

You seem like an intelligent person.

they go by factory weight. you can put 20 sandbags in the car to weigh it down, if they wanna screw you they will.

incorrect. i just spoke to a constable whos been in the work force for 14 years. and he said yes its ok and i asked him if i ever get pulled over can i call you as a reference and he said yes. so i dont know who youve spoken too

Mate you can play this two ways. You can take what a cop has told you as gospel and run the risk.

Or you can do a few simple calculations and work out that your car is in fact over the power/weight ratio and therefore illegal to drive on your P's.

When you get pulled over you can scream till your blue in the face that a police officer told you something, fact is they are going to laugh at you while they write out a ticket for driving a car over power/weight then tell you to tow your car home because you cant drive it.

read what you just wrote power to weight ratio, if the car weighs 100kg more then original then it passes as legal. my friend owns a 300zx twin turbo.. he got pulled over cop said this is over the power to weight ratio and he said no its not. cop got him to go weigh it and my mate just threw in some weights and it passed.

Vicroads dont have a list of CARS that cant be driven nor do the cops. If they did they wouldnt bother with power to weight ratio, they would just state "OK such and such cars cant be driven"

EDIT

The reason we have power to weight ratio is because its dangerous for p plates...but if you make the car heavier it is no longer dangerous there for legal make sense?

Why even bother starting a thread asking for an answer when you think you're right anyway?

14yrs and only a constable when they try to bump your rank every 5years i think it is? FAIL

    • Hey lads, reviving an old thread. As an update, since the last time replied to this thread, ive done mostly suspension. Havent touched the motor except for maintenance. Though upon changing spark plugs, found out i had splitfires pre-installed! Updates: - Got me some stock airbox top cover and snorkel to fit onto the original intake. Should be free of defects - Bought a set of R34 GT-T brakes (not installed yet, going to rebuild + respray in champion blue + white 'Nissan' text) - Bought the last set of bilsteins from @Sydneykid and had them installed. Has been making some sounds on the rear but hopefully should be sorted out after this New Year break. - Regreased front caster rod bushings (poly bushes..) - Rear upper camber arms - Whiteline sway bars (BNF27Z 22mm + BNR11XXZ 24mm). The rear sway bars are a bit short (ive read 50mm else where) but was still able to get them in. Anyhows, I reckon suspension is sorted now. Maybe replace bushes (do have a set of front upper control arms from SK not installed yet) but should be okay for now. From now, I'm wanting to start working on the motor, drivetrain etc etc. Still debating on the order to go on and what to buy etc but: - ECU ( Haltech or Link ( Link states that it dont support A/T or AWD functions... Can anyone attest to this? ) - Highflow turbo ( ATR43ss2 ) - Intercooler ( Not decided yet, but cant find many good afoordable ones. Toshi says to opt for crossflow Japanese. Bit difficult this one, unless I get a returnflow Blitz from JJ? ) - Injectors ( Any recommendations ? I do have a nismo FPR ( Thanks SK ) ) - Seats - Tune by either Toshi or DVS To be fair, I did consider just keeping the stock turbo and nistuning it. Sat in a mates stock N, that had something like 200kw, and I reckon that felt more than enough. Maybe I should just go this route ahhaha. Too many choices.... Planning a trip down south, so wanting to just clean things up and make sure it gets to and from in one piece. Anything else specifically I should do before ? Cheers lads
    • Must be for the car’s lucky charm 🤷🏽‍♂️ She runs fine, but it just seems to take about 1L less. Maybe I’ll have the oil sump dropped at some point to check if there is anything
    • Hmmm interesting. Mine is the exact same and clearly the right one. The mystery of the engine oil being full after 3.5-4L continues
    • Yes I as well would like to find out where I could get some of the seat material with the red or blue small squares in it
