I still say fork out some dollars for a helmet. Meeting the Australian standards is just a regulation that many expensive helmets far surpass. The expensive ones are almost always going to have better protections for your head than the cheap ones, it's not just comfort and weight. An ADR approved helmet doesn't guarantee your head will be safe, as any helmet is just helping where it can...so there are definitely levels of safety to a helmet's design...not just a static standard where that's as good as a helmet can be. I'll add to this, it is shocking some of the designs that do pass. Helmet manufacturers are not held liable for damage in accidents...so please don't think that they have a vested interest in anything but getting their helmet ADR approved - this includes your safety.
