Hi All,

Has anyone got an R33 GTSt airbox I can borrow / rent / buy?

Ive got Stagea series 1 (1997) with pod filter, and need the identity inspection done. I only wish to borrow or rent it for 1 week max.

Havent got a problem with buying one if need be.

Just want to bolt the airbox in, go down have the ID report performed (at Sturt Rd) and then give back the airbox with a 'donation' of your choosing!

yeah mate im sure i have a stock airbox. I just have to look for the bolts for it.

Cheers mate,

Had a couple of offers, one to borrow one for a week, and one to buy, so Im all set.

Thanks for the offer Nozila, it is much appreciated.

Everyone is so helpful on this forum! Cheers to you all!

Brendan

Hi all,

Well, had the identity inspection done, all is ok!

Luckily I was offered an R33 airbox to buy or borrow (thanks to undapsi, 4door_sleeper and nozila), so I bought one and whacked it on the car. Just before I got to the Sturt Rd premises I pulled over and uninstalled the turbosmart boost controller and took it back to standard (doenst work properly tho - boost spiked past 1bar!!! Goddamn!).

Well, they were trying to be real strict at the ID inspection. Being a Stagea, they have real dark factory standard side and rear windows, and they were trying to pick me up on that. I calmly pointed out it is adr approved and imported and complied that way, and showed them a dozen pictures of australian registered Stageas with the dark windows (keep the pics in the car in case I get pulled over and defected). They said the windows were ridicously dark, and made a phone call to confirm if they were legal or not. I guess I came out on top.

Was picked on about the boost gauge and told its illegal, but I mentioned that Id taken it off the top of the dash (and placed next to the rpm gauge), installed the original airbox and taken off the turbo timer and boost controller. I simply stated that Im trying to do the right thing, and if they so wished then I could arrange for the boost guage to be uninstalled. They were happy with that, and signed the forms. It helps when you're an imposing 2metres plus tall and built like a brick shithouse!!!!

So now the Stagea is all approved. This weekend the full 3inch exhaust dump and cat get put on, along with a new O2 sensor, the old pod filter and the old boost controller. More mods and a dyno in 2 weeks time.

So I guess you've got to show them that you're doing the right thing by having the car as stock as possible, and you should be allright (unless you've been sent to Regency). Good luck to you all!

Brendan

:O

thats fantastic news. bet you have a grin from one ear to the other.

Hell Yeah!

Just cant wait to go nuts with some mods.

(Need an R34 GTT intercooler tho, they seem hard to come across.)

Your lucky you didnt have to touch the tinted windows.

At regency, you cant have any front (drivers + passengers windows) tint. They made me strip it off.

With this in mind, there is double standards our there on the road, when factory cars come out with tint on these windows and window tint shops tint these windows as a standard job.... stupid gov. rules... make your mind up politicians!

Hi Mate, good point, but need to say that the standard Stagea doesnt have front window tint (tint to the front driver and passenger side windows is illegal as you say - pity so many new cars or used cars sold at caryards have tint installed! instant defect, but of course they are nver pulled over, just import car drivers......).

The Stageas come with very dark factroy windows to the rear passengers, the rear side wagon windows and the rear viewing window. Its not tinted, just very dark glass. It is adr approved, and complied that way. Still, the fella still scratched his head and was wondering whether it was defectable or not (in his defence there are afterall only 6 Stageas in Adelaide so he hadnt come across one before). Lucky Im keeping a heap of Stagea photos in my car showing how every standard aussie registered Stagea has such dark windows...

Cheers to you All!!! Brendan :(

  • 1 month later...

so can anyone confirm the requirements for living "down south"? are they going to ask for some kind of proof of residence, i.e. a bill with your address of some kind from victor harbor etc??

also what will they test at sturt versus regency.... and will they recognise a car that is already rego'd in NSW i.e. not a defected car....

I have a few things done to my car, and would hope to get it through easily.... I would just like to know what is seen as a no no these days...

Nah you just gotta ring up and find out when they are open, they only open certain days, and they shouldn't ask for any id, and i don't even think you have to book, just have the required paperwork. they don't check over it anywhere as near as much as regency, just go over the registration stuff, but i do recomend you do have good tyres and remove any obvious stuff.

i dont know about paper work for interstate cars as ive never bought one from interstate before but in terms of your cars modifications and appearace, i would try to make it look as stock as possible. since yours has ap racing brakes, sounds failry modded. although i have a friend who bought his car in a modded condition and got it registered and all the necessary paperwork done in whyalla (i think). give ice_duck a pm as he was the guy im referring to.

I'd say the brakes will be fin, but i'd suggest swapping/borrowing the tyres/rims. As for the paperwork, just ring up and ask them, or drop into a Department of Transport and i'm sure they will help you out. As for the other mods, just try and hide them, they don't look too closely at the Sturts office.

the tyres are DOT approved and also the rims are placarded on the inner door....

DOT is the American standard, so they dont have to accept it. You may be better getting in contact with someone who sells your tyres and ask for parerwork etc to show they are legal.

I dont think brakes will be an issue, but ensure your rims are legal (you suggested they were) and you should be fine.

    • I'm with GTS, that's not an actual overheat issue. That's an electrical issue.
    • So, it's clearly an electrical problem. Either with the gauge itself, or the sender. It appears to be voltage sensitive (ie, alternator output affects the reading.
    • Yes, at this stage of SAU threads, I  automatically assume that anyone here knows that everything depends on each and every setup and its choice of parts and what an individual wants from the setup. I think your misunderstanding what I've said, I'm not saying your curve will move to the right.. I'm stating the opposite; that my setup has a much larger turbo than my last one, my current exhaust manifold runners are 2-3x longer than the last one, the intercooler is longer and thicker (hks 103mm thick), the itbs are now oversized from 45mm up to 49mm, and the plenum is now a larger Nismo plenum that's been port matched. As a result, I'm making more power, torque and boost 1000rpm earlier than my last setup. My curve moved left, in a big way. You guys with 800-1000+hp turbos should be considering hks v-cam or the other Japanese company Sakura who makes RB25 Neo vct adaptor kits for RB26's. they all make more power / boost / torque far earlier and higher peak numbers. Dahtone Racing modifies the Hks v-cam systems to his own specs and he also developed the worlds first and best dbw individual throttle body kits, to complement his V-cam. Every single car is 800-1200+hp and they all produce huge gains in response and peak power.
    • I have a 2008 Skyline 370gt with about 160,000 km on the clock currently. A while ago, I noticed the temp gauge would start climbing but it comes down when I give it some throttle. I took it into the shops. The technicians comments are transcripted below. Reported they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle mechanically and they pressure tested the cooling system. Funnily enough, the technician commented that the temperature dropped back down when the car is stationary but this is when I'd notice the temp gauge to be climbing. Just wondering if anyone else experienced anything similar to enlighten me? Cos at the onset, the temps were going up one tick and then comes back down when I step on it. Now, the temps are climbing all the way to the top of the gauge, and it's making me very nervous lol. It also doesn't come down to the neutral position anymore. PS I do have a small exhaust leak near the drivers side caused by when I got f**ked by a really steep driveway at a mall I never visited before. Not sure if this would affect the sensor. Technician comments: Check and verify Fan/Cooling system - ALL OK max 106*C and fans operating at 100% Cools down right away. Checked Fan Operation - 55%@101*C, 85% @ 104*C and 100% @ 105*C Vehicle did not exceed these temperatures with max load. Temperature recovered back to 99*C after fan operation while vehicle Stationary.
    • It really depends on your setup. Mine is 'accidently' more suited to revving higher. bigger cams, turbo etc. Plus my super long first takes donkey years to come onto boost, so if it will move my power band to the right, maybe i'll pass on this. i have a G45-1500 going on there soon which I suspect might make it more of a fat pig.
