Fault Code Reader ?

I would like to be able to read & clear error codes and make minor adjustments such as idle speed on a 1998 R34GT-t Skyline

.I would prefer to have a hand held unit to do this with along the lines of an OBD II style reader.

I am as electronically adept as a newt.I'm not after a major tuning tool as I aint got a clue, I go to someone who knows wtf they're doing for that stuff.

Can anyone advise me what I'm actualy looking for ?

cool, in the process of getting one of these, sounds like its the right way to go. saves reading blinks for error codes.

is there any difference between the direct USB ones and the ones with USB addaptors? (other than the plug)

The serial cables are more compatible and cheaper, but you will be hardpressed to find a newish laptop with a serial port. The USB cable are just as good, just whatever you do, do not get a serial cable and use a USB adapter, the likely hood of it not working is very high.

Thanks for the help guys I think the ECUTalk ver 2 reader will be the go , that'll about strech my technical expertise to the max and doubtless be a lot safer for the car than a flaptop given my incurable propensity for fiddling.

Only one problem, they seem to be out of stock and the group buy I thought was goin aint, or I can't find it if it is, is there just the one or are others out there ? That are any good that is.

About a month or so ago, the aus300zx forum had a massive groupbuy of 40+, I was part of it. The groupbuy brought the price down to about $188 delivered for the green lcd. I originally tried to start one up but there was not even 1 bit of interest on this forum.

Ah Ha , that explains it, I knew I'd seen something about the group buy , it must have been your post, I've just ordered a greeny direct as there should be some available next week, it's a shame about the group buy not flying though.

newkleer (the guy who does the displays) is a member on here and he had a sort of group buy going for a while earlier this year.

i don't think the display lets you put the car into base idle mode though to properly adjust the idle, but a consult cable will allow you to do this with software such as datascan.

the display itself doesnt yet (that should hopefully be there in the future...first bit of adjustments, fuel/ignition timing, will be in next firmware). of course u can use the display as a consult cable with the supplied usb cable, so u can still do it with free conzult or other software that does base idle mode (obd scantech?).

will hopefully have your display ready by monday basho (hopefully today), will email you to confirm when its done

Yeah I really want to get a USB ECUTalk cable to hook my laptop up to my car... can anyone explain how it would work though? My battery life isn't very long on my laptop (less than 20 minutes or so!) so I would want to just take the car for a spin (once hot) and hope that some software would log all the data for me... then save the log file before the laptop dies.... haha

Then obviously get it back inside, power it up from mains, and open the log file and check it all out.... is this what I would be able to do with the ECUtalk gear?

yep with the ecutalk cable/software u can do that, start car, connect cable, start program, choose COM port, select sensors, check the log button, and display the gauges. it then logs all data to a txt file the same place the ecutalk exe is.

if ur laptop runs out of battery then it would still have however much of the logs were saved before it shutdown

i can do $65 ($10 off) for forum members paying via bank deposit (pm me when youre ready mentioning that). cost of cables has gone up $5 for recent batches as more parts of the assembly is contracted out compared to the first batch. itll come with a cd with usb drivers, and ecutalk (and other) software.
