Just wondering if anyone has a flare, its supposed to be located in the passenger side foot well if you dont have it. I think its good having it. not that im ever going to use it. I wouldnt even know how!!!

Aparently every car in japan is supposed to have one and ive also heard that its there cause in case you break down you let off your flare so someone can find you. I dont know how much truth is in that. Anyone know any different?

Still got mine :mrt: ads to the charm of the car, and i doubt that them passing their use by date will suddenly make them blow up haha I'm not entirely sure in what kind of situation you would need to use a flare in a car... haha oh well its cool Japanese idiosyncrasies

i can think of many, how about being stuck in the mountains with no phone and a broken down car and its dark?

how else will people see you? :mrt:

same reason people have them on boats. its for visibility. plus they are fun!! :)

The flares are in the cars for the same reason that some of the European cars, like the wife's Saab, have to carry a warning triangle.

It is manditory to carry one and if you break down, you are supposed to walk 100m or more back down the road and light your flare, leaving it burning on the ground, so that no one drives up the back of you..

and yes they are supposed to be removed for compliance, but then so are a lot of other items... :mrt:

to the best of my knowledge, in australia it's not illegal to carry one without any kind of license, but it is illegal to set them off in non-emergency situations.

the majority of flares that come with vehicles expire after about 4 years or so i think. the worst thing that i've seen happen by firing an expired flare was that it caught on fire, instead of smoking, lol. by "caught on fire" i mean barely foot long flames. that was 1 out of about 6 or 7 flares that were all about 10 years expired.

Yeah I had two flares in my car...one was in the passenger map holder and another hidden under the passenger kick panel. They are usually removed at complience but they do sneak through. One of them is expired and the other expires this year....the expired one my friends set it off at new years and the other one is missing...I'm thinking its somewhere in the car or my mates pinched it off me

no big loss....a friend though the flare holder was a umbrella holder...lol
