Hi all,

My R34 GT-R is currently going on a slight weight loss program and I have now decided to make it pretty much a dedicated track car. I am now taking out whatever I dont need/use (backseats, spare tire, speakers/head unit, HICAS, interior trim etc etc) and so now I want to remove the SRS Air Bags from my R34 GT-R. I have one on the stock steering wheel and I have another on the passenger side dash board.

So my question is this, how do I go about doing this? What do I have to take off/disconnect before even beginning to touch the air bag system? To my knowledge they can be quite sensitive (in terms of the electrics?) and if done incorrectly they can deploy???

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Glen

I did this for my c35, so it should be similar.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, don't do it. I don't take responsibility for any injury or damage.

First you'll have to get the right sockets, i don't remember the size, but the bolts should be tamper safe torx bolts.

When you're ready to start, disconnect your battery and the airbag fuse (just to be safe) and then wait about 20minutes so everything can be discharged.

Now you can begin taking the airbags out.

On the driver's side, there should be two cover pieces on each side of the steering wheel that you should be able to pop off with a screw driver. You'll see the bolts when the covers are popped off. After the bolts are out, the airbag and cover should just slide off.

For the passenger side, you might have to take your glove box out, I had to. Mine was above my glovebox, so I had to take it out completely.

I had an igniter under my center console also, so you might want to check for that.

When it's all out, you'll probably want to take the SRS light out of the gauge cluster since it can get annoying.

Also, if you plan on storing the units, have them face up. That way if they do go off, they don't shoot through your roof.

If you google this subject, you should be able to get a walkthrough with pictures and the socket sizes.

Thanks heaps for your info okidori!

I have a few follow up questions...

1) Is the Air bag fuse where all the other fuses are? Ie - the fuse box under the bonnet?

2) What is the 'igniter' that you are referring to under the centre console? Does that have to be removed as well?

3) How would I go about taking the SRS light out of the guage cluster? I mean is it just a matter of taking out the guage cluster and taking out the small bulb that illumnates the SRS light? Or is there more to it?

Cheers,

Glen

For the bulb, as you said just pull out the cluster and remove the bulb.

The ignitor just sends a signal to the bag to deploy it, you can pull that out to save weight as well. Also not sure where they are on a r34 but you can pull the G-sensors for the SRS system as well

I think stokesy answered most of it.

I think the airbag fuse was in the cabin fusebox (drivers side somewhere around the gas pedal) for my car.

The label should read something like "エア バッグ" and it might read from top to bottom.

for the light just pull out the cluster like stokesy said and look for where the "SRS" light is and take out that bulb...it might actually be a big led.

Hope this helps

Hey mate,

I just removed all the airbags out of my R34. I think okidori is referring to the standard airbag computer that sends a signal to deploy the airbags.

It's located in the centre console, just underneath your centre arm rest (behind the handbrake). I'd recommend removing that before anything else, well after the disconnecting the battery of course.

It's not heavy but every bit helps

Thanks all for your help guys!

I have taken out my centre console and can see the small orange box which appears to be the igniter for the Air bags and is bolted down by the 'tamper safe torx bolts'. Is this the only place where I need to use these torx bits? Do I need any other 'special' tools?

Thanks again you guys!

The tamper proof bolts are everywhere where you will find an airbag.

The airbag computer has x4 which is exactly the same size as the passenger airbag, which again is held in with 4 bolts.

The steering wheel bolts are a bit smaller (10mm I think as opposed to 14mm) but they are still tamper proof bolts and have 2 on each side of the steering wheel.

Hope that helps now

You can get the tamper proof bolts from Super Cheap etc yeah?

threads like this just make me wanna cry ... why not get an R32 GTR and make it a track car? It's so much lighter even without taking any of this shit out.. leave the beautiful R34 GTR Vspec2 alone dammit!
