Stripped Rear-vision Mirror Retract Gears. Anyone Fixed/replaced Before?

Recommended Posts

The gears in my Stagea's drivers-side retractable rear-vision mirror seem to be stripped. The mirror becomes wobbly at speed, and although the mirror folds to the 'out' position, it is unable to fold back in again.

Is this hard to fix? I had a go at pulling the mirror off and having a look, but it seems pretty well stuck on. Is it a case of ordering the new cogs or electric motor assembly, or?

Any help would be appreciated,

Hey mate, not sure if it's the same on the stags but on my R33 I pulled off my side mirror... there's 2 bolts inside the door holding it on, you really need to remove the door trim to get that A-sail off to expose the bolts. Then disconnect the wiring etc and the mirror assembly should just slide straight out of the door mount.

My gears were corroded stuck fast and covered in crap... was gonna be way too much work to clean/fix it so I'm just holding out until I have 'spare' money to find another one from a wreckers... I'm not fussed by it til then haha.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to purchase one on the SAU for sale section. I am hoping it is going to be fairly easy to transfer the internals of the new one into my yellow plastic housing. Has anyone tried completely dismantling a mirror and trying this before?

I'd dare say it would be *easy* enough... if you've never done anything like it before, make sure you have a check through this link:

There's another guide floating around somewhere in the tutorials section that explains it better but I couldn't find it.

I have the same issue with my R34 ... I thought someone might have caught the mirror walking/driving past and broke the internals ..its loose and nothing stopping it coming in all the way so it gets annoying. I might try some ghetto fix with glue/tape as it sounds like too much of a hassle to fix properly

    • Looking forward to see if you can find something decent Duncan. I'm with Enthusiast. They seem happy enough to take my money but I have never claimed. I'm also also not convinced they would pay. Because, as per their PDS: I've ECU, exhaust, intake, intercooler, engine, turbo, fuel system, radiator, brakes, suspension and wheels listed on the insurance policy. But none of it is engineered or formally signed off. I presume that makes it not comply with ADRs. Because anything that might get defected goes against those rules, right?   Their other gotcha is parking on the street at home. Which is probably fine, but still.   Overall, + Can set salvage rights on the policy + Able to list modifications + Agreed value insurance - Question mark on whether they would pay a claim. The terms seem to hedge against it. - Only listed drivers on the policy are insured.   Overall I treat and drive the car like I am not insured.
