It was indeed an opinion and advice, if people don't want to take it they don't have to and I won't begrudge them for it, but if they question/challenge it on here then I will most certainly defend it until I feel I've been proven incorrect...or I get sick of arguing it...

But like I said, these aren't just my words. These come from someone with experience in it. Not that it matters anyway - as I said before, just because I can't put my advice into my driving behaviour doesn't mean I'm wrong in my advice. And to deny the importance of physics and calculations in motorsport is just ridiculous. This kind of comment spits on everything that goes into Formula 1 racing. If all you do in motorsport is trial and error it until you find out what works, then you are limiting yourself to your own experience and ignoring knowledge that could help you out.

Tell me that Michael Shumacher, Mark Webber and the like are worrying about physics and calculations when they are driving their cars in a race... I don't think so...

Of course I was specific. Someone showed me a video from a 3 year ago DECA and asked me to advise on what could have been done better? Would you have preferred me to just say "drive better"? I never assume anything either...even though the course looked familiar, he appeared to miss one of the cones for the course so I could have been wrong in assuming it was the same. Hence uncertain statements like "If he wasn't supposed to go around the right of that middle cone".

I will attempt to demonstrate what I'm talking about, but hell, it's very unreasonable to deny me being correct just because beyond my own ability I can't demonstrate it for you. I'm sure formula one drivers don't tell their engineers where to go just because they can't get out on the track and demonstrate to the driver how an adjustment to the suspension could be better used by the driver. There is an "on paper" side to motorsport. For the record I did learn alot on Saturday by watching other drivers, mostly in relation to the type of surface and condition, but it was useful nonetheless and I took it on board. Regardless, with no homologation and alot of different cars present...DECA results mean nothing beyond comparing to your own times...so I can't even prove my advice to be useful even if I came outright fastest for the event. Try lining up the exact same car and you might have some foundations for comparing driving styles.

I look ahead regardless, to set myself up for the next couple of cones, but I still think numbers would help in this instance. But hey, I'm not demanding my inability to remember things be compensated for, it was just a suggestion that someone else made and I agree with.

I'm not talking about pen/paper/calculator physics mate, you know what I'm talking about. I think you'll find both those drivers do some quick mental sums when approaching corners and before hitting a track, deciding on road position, gear, throttle and braking effort. Senna did it best...

I'm already yearning for November to come around, I can't believe how much fun it was.

Any advice for what I should do in the next three months to get my yellow boat around the track a bit faster? I'm on a budget so bang for buck value is good.

Personally I'm thinking at least one day with Driver Dynamics, a rear strut and maybe some semi slicks (will they help much?).

Semi's help, but they're not for those on a super tight budget. At 2k a set they're bloody expensive, and road driving will kill them.

Driver dynamics would be your best bet I'd say, nothing beats time behind the wheel.

Serious? I just assumed tires would be relatively cheap. For that price I'd get some nice coil overs instead. Then again, I really don't know much about cars and suspension I'd probably be wasting my money there too.

I've been having a kind of strange pattern the past 3 DECAs

1st DECA i was 37th, 2nd i was 47 and now i'm 27th

Very surprised how well i did, especial after seeing how many cones i have hit, i only remember hitting 2 or so.

If you can tell the difference with a relatively stock car when you add a rear strut brace then you're probably going as fast as possible already. Don't waste your money. Keep your eye out for some used semis, that's what I do and you get them for a fraction of the cost. People will tell you that they're nowhere near as good and blah blah but they're still better than most streets and will last much longer than streets when being driven in anger. Save your money for the coilovers (DO NOT buy second hand - I've seen that many stuffed used ones), get some used semi's and you will be paddocks quicker.

PS the driver training day will always be money well spent. You'll get faster and safer. I think we all could use a lesson.

    • How's everyone going? Just a shout-out introducing myself. I'm James, I live on the north side of Brisbane. I bought an R33 that had been left to rot in someone's front yard for 14 years. Apparently, it has immobiliser/fuel issues. Long story short, it's suffering from a seized engine, plus whatever else turns up once it runs. The car is pretty good considering it sat for so long. It pretty much died after being imported. It has a bunch of Jap parts and a full Top Secret body kit. It's painted Fiat Turchese Festival, or aqua blue if you're not French. Another project to throw money at!
    • So the clockspring is responsible for the indicators cancelling on their own? I thought that was the function of that white thing in the center (any idea what it's called?)
    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion 
    • So, the other thing I've sorted is a baseline dyno run up at Unigroup's new location. The auto trans was a little unco-operative by both shifting down when the throttle was floored on the dyno (so Mark had to ramp it up more slowly than in a manual) and also by shifting up at 6,000 even in sports mode instead of the indicated redline of 7,000 Still, on a hot day it made 240rwkw at 16psi which seems about right for 300kw (400hp) through an auto at the wheels.  The shape of the curve is not quite right because it was not full throttle to about 4,500 to stop it kicking down, but until I can get a tune on the auto trans control this was the best we could do.....full boost will be well below 5,000 once that is sorted, I'll get some data logs when I can to confirm For comparison, the R32 made 255 at 12psi (at 4,500) on the same dyno with tune, n1 turbos, cam gears, big exhaust but otherwise all standard so the v37 is likely a little better out of the box. One thing that is very clear is that the standard water to air intercoolers are not up to sustained use at full throttle in warm ambient temps. After about 5 runs (so only a few minutes full throttle), it was pulling boost and timing and dropping 10-15% power. Unfortunately I didn't get that printout and the Unigroup guys are away at the moment, will try and get hold of it on their return. So, looks like a healthy engine to start modifying and the only real area of concern is the w2a heat exchangers which the aftermarket has plenty of solutions for    
    • I maintain it actually looked really nice in person. So much so that I thought "No, this is illegal" but there it was, clear as day. I think we can easily call the wing and wheels/height to be transformative. Not saying it's better than the GR Whatever, or the 86, or the WRX STI or anything of that sort (the internet says it all bolts up so you can buy best of all worlds?) but it's still at least a thing and not nearly AS bad as people say.
