Ok guys just double checking something here.

Garrett GT2860R 707160 -7 = R34 N1 (14411-AA403)

Garrett GT2860R 707160 -5 = HKS GT2350 (Almost equivalent to garrett)

Garrett GT2859R 707160 -9 = HKS GT-SS (Garrett without actuator)

Garrett GT2859R 780371 -1 = HKS GT-SS (Garrett with actuator)

I see alot of guys referring to the -9 units, but according to Garrett, these do not include actuators.

The last in the list above is essentially the GT-SS which comes with an actuator.

I know over time there has been changes in the numbers when it comes to turbo identity, so probably what we used to refer to as the -9 should now be the -1 ??? as Garrett no longer has a GT2560R -9 listed, but the GT2859R -1

Also there has been debates between using the -7 (R34 N1) and the old -9 / new -1 (GT-SS) but the only difference in specs is the 55 comp trim on the R34 N1 and the 56 trim on the GT-SS. Is this such a big deal???

I guess two of them will more or less spool the same with the -1 (GT-SS) having a little more on top?

All the above model nos. were taken from Garrett's web site TODAY.

once you have the answer can you please (or someone) write up a FAQ and place it in the tutorial section

there is common confusion over which garret equiv model is the HKS model and so forth

this would remove endless posts, frustration and speculation over which is which

Little time ATM but a taste .

Go back to turbobygarrett and look at the compressor housing sizes (0.42/0.60) and the turbine dimensions because there are differences .

707160-5 (CHRA 446179-51) has the 76T turbine/0.60 AR comp hsg and 60.1mm 62T comp . Not same wheel as 2860RS .

707160-7 (CHRA 446179-54) has the 62T turbine/0.42 AR comp hsg and 60.1mm 55T comp . 707160-9 (CHRA 446179-65) has the 62T turbine/0.42 AR comp hsg and 59.4mm 56T comp .

From memory the 0.42 AR comp hsg is T3 family where the 0.60 one is T4 family .

The 62 trim turbine is more about response than all out flow like the 76T one .

707160-9 gets the smaller trim turbine/slightly smaller OD compressor/smaller family and AR compressor housing .

Like i said previously the GT2859R 780371 -1 is the exact turbo, but with an actuator.

I am not a turbo expert by any means, but what i would like to know is will that difference of 0.7mm on the Exd of the comp wheel, and a difference of 56T as compared to 55T will make such a big difference between the R34 N1 and the GT-SS turbos, and if so what will be the likely effects in terms of spool up time and peak power?

And i guess instead of upgrading stockies to N1s it will be better just to get the GT-SS (-9 or -1) ???

both the GT2859R turbos are identical other than the actuator (stock actuator can be used anyway). One shouldn't be referred to as 'old' or 'new' as it would confuse the hell out of some people. It's entirely a matter of choice whether or not one chooses an actuator but it's the same turbo.

The difference between the -9 and -7 is mainly in the design of the wheel rather than the difference in size. It is a big difference in efficiency. The -9 (GT-SS) is much more efficient and over a broader flow range.

It would be nice if someone had pics of the GT2859R's compressor , someone here had GTR GTSS turbos but never got around to posting pics of one's comp wheel .

It is interesting that the comp wheel is 0.7mm smaller on the 59R and I'm sure there would be differences in tip height as well . Whatever Garrett did HKS cashed in on the better match between the compressor and turbine .

If the price is similar/same I don't see any reason to buy the -7's .

Both HKS and Garrett use the 59.4mm 56T compressor and 53.8mm 62T turbine.

Brad I mean between 707160-9 and 707160-5 turbos , they use different compressor wheels .

As for the two GT2859R's , they use the same cartridge so they use the same compressor wheel .

I'd say logically speaking the ones without actuators are in the form supplied to HKS who used a different actuator .

Yes HKS loses the monopoly over time , probably anti competition laws . Generally the only drama is if HKS uses non Garrett housings because Garrett don't supply those .

Good examples are say the "real" GT3076R , it was a HKS spec unit but you can buy them through Garrett nowdays . Fingers crossed also the 52 comp trim version I'm hoping .

The GTRS is another one , you can buy the T28 flanged version with the Nissan/Garrett comp cover on it too .

GT2859R/GTSS a third example .

Many of these HKS spec Garrett turbos have been around for quite a while so if you ask the right people you can probably order them in if prepared to wait . Provided you know the turbo and cartridge number you're in with a fighting chance .

Also i see there is a fitting of what looks to be the oil drain from the turbo to the sump that comes with the HKS GT-SS kit..... Why is this included??? and is this, or any other fittings or changes that needs to be made when fitting the Garrett turbos???

The flange for the oil drain has the bolt holes closer together on the newer garretts. All u need to do is slot the holes closer to the centre on the stock oil drains with a file. I dunno what the actuators on em are. I think most just buy the 707160-x and use stock actuators.

Oil restrictors???

yeh it seals fine. Stock actuators bolt on. Turbos have oil restrictors built in to the oil inlet but may need more if ur running a lot of oil pressure. My mate has run a tomei pump for a couple of yrs without extra restrictors so should be sweet.
