Ive recently purchased a mechanical boost gauge for my r33 gtst and have wired it all up and pulled the vacuum hose through into the engine bay and after reading some previous posts (without pics) i am unsure of the best place to tap into the line for the y piece, should it be at the front of the manifold or at the rear? some people say one thing others say another could i get your professional thoughts as to where to tap the y into for the most accuracy.

most people go spot 2, because it is closest to the firewall and a bit less obvious.

neither of these will give you the most accurate reading though. they will give you an accurate reading of how much boost the engine is getting, but not what the turbo is actually doing. to get an accurate reading of how much boost the turbo is producing you need it reading from before the intercooler, however this will not give you a vaccum reading like having it from the plenum will.

bump

I don't know why you need to bump it, you just got 2 answers and they're both the same.. it doesn't matter either 1 or 2 because with you both, you will read +ve and -ve pressure of the plenum. Just don't be a tool and mount it pre throttle body like some.

Well id hesitate to tap it off the FPR as mechanical gauges intrudce latency issues. Ideally it should have a short genuine line from the plenum keeping it responsive to intake variations. The best place to throw a mech gauge i believe is to a vac line that doesnt have critical components feeding from it.

I too have that exact gauge, have fed the vac line through but have been lazy in conecting it. So where have the others connected it to?

Funny you say that, the first night i plumbed it up i went for a few runs and i had the engine light come on. That was plumbed to the vac line from plenum to boost sensor?(R34) I have since pulled it out and no real issues since. Im assuming by taping that vac line it would be getting a lower reading than actual. Hence why id like to find out what others have done.

Someone a while ago said the FPR is not a good idea....

Cheers

Makes no difference, you won't even notice the difference!

if you don't believe me, connect to Boost Gauges and test it yourself

    • Happy new years folks! Wishing you all a successful year of money pit ownership!  So the subframe bushes are out....   Ok, who else has done that job before??  What a C U Next Tuesday of a job that is!  Be glad to not do that again in a hurry! I think I explored every option available to chop the middle section of the bushes out, most of them unsuccessfully! I dried a holesaw, die grinder, normal drill bit, air chisel, etc, etc. The true success happened by accident when I'd decided to try a step drill I spotted on the bench on the way passed.  See, there are benefits to never cleaning up after yourself! It RIPPED through so so much better than the drill bit. It has to be the skinniest one available so its small enough to fit between the inner tube and outer casing but it made easy work of it.  First one i hammered the shit out of... New method- 20250102_185506.mp4     I did the other 5 in less time than I fluffed around with the first one. I used the cut off saw (sawsall as the yanks love to call them) to cut a break in the casing. Even with that they're still a prick to hammer or air chisel out.  The last few i just went rambo with the air chisel without cutting them. I overcome one of the early ones so will hit the with the mig to fill the cut then sand it off smooth.  The carnage left over-   I've also been "nesting" ie, cleaning up my babies nursery,  ie cleaning the f**king pig sty of a shed. I've got that much shit laying around it's as cluttered as my head!  Getting things put away, in boxes, on shelves, hanging off walls, all to get some working space back again.  Hopefully that keeps me motivated....
    • AFAIK does the base map for Haltech even have the 4D compensation enabled? It's been a while but when I looked at it I remember it was actually using pure TPS as one load signal and MAP for another. Seemed workable but not ideal by any stretch. A lot of people have "make the event-itis" which leads to stuff like this happening.
