ive never had any experience with any turbo car. I just bought the skyline like 5 days ago. Before that, i had a integra vti-r. So i dont know how he came up with that conclusion, but he told me that i need to change the turbo gasket.

$60-$100 for gasket, $120 for the JPNZ english Translation of the engine manual, 6hrs of your time & its done, I was quoted around $600-800 mark for someone else to do it & change studs as 7 of mine had snapped & 2 turbo bolts had disappeared into the ether somewhere (found only once everything was off).

Its a really easy job to do mate so dont waste your hard earned & learn a little about your car in the process.

I also found blown exhaust manifold gasket as well as the hole blown out the side of the turbo gasket which was giving me a wicked howl when on the gas- maybe your mate has heard a similar sound before & has done this job also

ok, well which gasket is he really meaning? there are 3 gaskets near the turbo, and 2 of them are directly related to the turbo. i am assuming that toddlls was talking about the manifold gasket, which is the hardest to do, although it doesn't require a manual to know how to do it. however this gasket isn't really anything to do with the turbo, it is just near the turbo. non-turbo cars still have this gasket.

the 2 gaskets on the turbo are the one between the turbo and the manifold, and the gasket between the turbo and the dump pipe. this is the easiest one to change. the other gasket isn't that hard to change, but is a small pain to do.

but first i would find out exactly what makes him think you need to replace the gasket, and which gasket he is talking about.

Just a stupid question when changing these? Is the exhaust manifold to turbo gasket supposed to go on a certain way? They have an indent running all around it and don't know whether it can go either way around? I just put on a new turbo and am I trying to track down all leaks so I want to ensure I've done it right.

It doesn't matter. The "indent" is there simply to provide a good seal between the two faces. The nissan ones actually have a thick indent running in like a swirl pattern i'd assume this would provide a better seal again but that said the thin metal ones work great provided both surfaces are flat.
