Hey everyone. i'm pretty new to the Skyline scene (previously, and still, from the rotary scene) and often keep my eye on these forums.

I recently purchased a C34 Laurel, personally imported into QLD. Upon changing the rego to SA and having an ID check, i was informed that the car didn't have a compliance plate, at all! This required me to have a full regency inspection. During the inspection the inspector noticed a Mod Plate (LO3) but had no idea what is was for, and after asking the other staff they didn't know either!

While they were doing that i whipped out the iPhone for a quick search and found this:

After i told him this he said, "well you probably didn't even have to get this inspection done, but you're here now and i don't recognise that mod plate". Then he didn't pass my car because of things like; rubber exhaust mount starting to split, no 80Kp/h sticker on the space saver, exhaust note was 93db and a slightly leaking shock. I had just spent a shitload having the car spotlessly prepared.

Has anyone heard of the LO3 mod plate? Is it only recognised in QLD? This whole process has been annoying and i've gone to every length to make sure it wasn't going to be difficult.

Been through this one before Dean - the requirements for registration are different from state to state, so an LO3 or engineers certificate from interstate isn't worth the paper it's written on in SA. EVERY personal import (and every 15 year import or pre-'89 import) goes over the pits at Regency, regardless of whether or not it has been previously registered interstate.

What's more, you'll need to go into TransportSA and ask at the counter on the left (Vehicle Safety Standards) for a statement of requirements (it'll be mailed to you, you can't get one over the counter) which details what work you'll need to do to get it registered in SA. Once that work is done, book it in for your inspection, and for obvious reasons make sure you've fixed the other stuff too :devil:

I was mostly just being curious about the mod plate (which i thought was just from a previous bucket seat installation) at the same time as trying to form some sort of post count to gain access to the PM function!

One thing that i can't find actually, is the 80kph sticker for the space saver. Do you know where i could get one? Otherwise i'll have to find someone to borrow an already stickered tyre, or buy some sticker paper and make one up!!

you can borrow mine if you want mate. im pretty sure its got a sticker on it but will double check tomorrow.

ive also heard of people writing 80km/h with markers on em and what not to pass. seems dodgy but apparently works (dont take my word for it)

that'd be great! although my Laurel has 4 stud wheels, is an R33 5 stud? they would probably notice if it was the wrong stud pattern.

i might just make up a design and get it printed onto a sticker. that way i'm set for life! will let you know if i need to borrow one though.

Sorry to bring this post up again , but im going through the same thing , GTR from queensland into adelaide , i have a L0 1 modification plate which doesnt mean shit in S.A , i have a list which include child restraint anchorages , high mount stop light ,seat belts , mirrors concave and safety glass . what did you have on your requirements !

i'm not sure, but all of that (child restraints etc.)was done before i bought the car.

my car just had to pass an SA roadworthy test, like any other car on our roads. it was a good thing because it now keeps me out of trouble. was fairly simple in the end.

i received an exemption from compliance certificate and a sticker to put in the engine bay.

    • The R32 suffers from an instrument binnacle that is uncomfortably close to the design of a VN Commodore's. But beyond that, the layout of the rest of everything, and the materials (ie the vinyl coverings on dash, armrest, etc) are acceptable, and the patterns on the fabrics are not as blergh as those in the R33. And R33 seats are....quite unattractive. I know it's only small details there, but I reckon the R33 got worse than the 32. But the big blergh is the overall shape of the dash on the R33. It's just has that whole Maxima/Pulsar sort of look to it. Nothing special at all. Generic Nissan sedan. Whereas, at least the R32 dash/binnacle was different. Less a wide expanse of boringly curved plastic. More a "cockpit" sort of look, even if nowhere near to the degree that the A90 Supras got. R34 seats look good on their own, until you realise that they are indistinguishable from the shape and fabric on 70 other Japanese cars. And the foam bolsters on them suffer even worse than the earlier cars. Other than that I don't really have an opinion the rest of the R34 interior. I took the bits of the R34 I wanted (brakes and engine) and added them to the best external appearance Skyline in the modern era (the 32). So nyerr!
    • Can I be your first customer? I would like hard lines done for the fuel system, 8AN up and 8AN back and the underside wire wheeled and coated (brush or sprayed) with that black tar shit.
    • Speak for yourself, I love the R33 interior. 32 is blergh. I like the 34 interior too. Then you start getting much newer in most cars and they all turn back to blergh. 😛
    • 500-600hp into a RB is already 'sinking endless amounts of money' into an engine. Especially a 30 year old engine. Unfortunately this is the RB Game. Considering stock power (or at least stock components) will do ~360whp on 98 by simply turning up the boost on the stock gear on a RB26, that would be where I'd say the cutoff point for "sinking endless amounts of money into the engine" Cause to even do this reliably you'd probably need to replace all the bits anyway cause they're old, starting your sinking journey anyway. I reckon the least painful way is rebuilding the engine to make 50hp over stock lol. The 'plan your ownership around a rebuild' was a common saying 15 years ago.
