My 1994 Skyline R33 gts 25 has an abnormal idle when warming up... i will drive for a while from cold and the stop at some lights and the idle will jump from around 900 to 1400rpms. What could be causing this problem and how could i fix this?

Cheers

Mr R33GTS

more info?

When its cold my line starts up on 1200 and drops to 700 once warm its just the 'choke' mechanism.

If it happens when its cold and only cold then its to do with the tuning or an electrical fault

If it happens cold or warm then it can also be mechanical.

The idle does become steady when warm. But when it is cold the idle jumps up and down almost like im revving the engine. My mates are saying coolant and or air temp sensors... I dunno?

let me make sure were talking about the same thing:

U turn on ur car, its cold, u start driving, while driving it is fine, you pull up to the lights and the car starts reving... after the water temp goes normal the car is fine...

if this is the case ur mates are wrong.... they may have guessed something to do with radiator as seems to appear it stops when the coolant is warmed up.... but its not the case

Skylines have an AAC... and auxiliary air control valve that is used when ur foot isnt on the accelerator opening up the butterfly. This is how the car doesn't stall when you stop at lights. on the back of the plenum, the big shinny metal thing on the driver's side of the motor at the top, near the firewall, thats where the AAC is located. Unfortunetly as our cars are up to ~19ish years old, it gets a build up of carbon over the years, which is your issue.

Heres the link to the tutorial.... u need to take the AAC off, give it a GOOD cleanout with carby cleaner (strong stuff, much stronger then degs-infact the first time I did it i spilt a lil on my washing machine as i was moving the aac from the sink in the landry... in 2 seconds it started melting the plastic... smells sweet though...), chuck it back on and u'll be fine. u'll see a screw on the side of it, that is ur idle screw, u can adjust that in or out, and will affect ur revs.

After u have cleaned it, it may still rev abit, so turn ur car on and wait for the revs, get a screw driver and screw it in or out until it stops.

    • From the pictures I have when doing the job the flywheel is the same diameter, I don't think they're playing weird tricks like putting weights at the outer diameter to increase flywheel inertia or anything like that. The OEM flywheel is definitely heavier, but it's not a huge difference. Quoted weight savings of the clutch is 2 kg so I can't imagine the flywheel being lighter than ~7 kg. Kind of regret not weighing it before the clutch went into the car but as far as driveability goes I have no complaints.
    • HKS trigger kit should be very easy to integrate with a Link. It's a 36-2 crank trigger. Hard part is finding the motivation to take off the timing belt and everything on the front of the engine to install it. You also need to cut out a hole in the oil pump housing so the sensor can read the trigger wheel. Changing out the cam sensor for a 24 tooth setup is probably good enough but as others have mentioned depending on what underlying assumptions are changed it becomes more of a problem. Reading the crank state off of the cam is an abstraction that works in the general case, but if you have an edge case it makes less and less sense. There is a GTX2860 gen 2 that can take a compact 5 bolt housing so it's direct bolt on but I'm not 100% sure of what's involved. Peak compressor efficiency drops off a bit on these turbos vs -5s, 77% vs 73% but you get way, way wider region of operation. The -5s have a really strange surge line in their compressor map that is all over the place. If you think the hot side on the -5s aren't open enough you can try the Tomei T550B turbos which a local tuner seems to be happy with:
