Well iv been trying to decide lately how to spend the money i have saved up to buy a car. im currently on my ps and im moving onto my greens early next year and its time for a new car. the first decision has been made that im getting manual coz if i dont i will never stick to driving manual. right now im thinking of either one of these decisions:

A: get a s2000 till im ready to get a gtr but the only problem is im kinda after a 4 seater and if you say a integra i want atleast a rear wheeler lol

B: buy a r33 gtr within the 2 yrs while driving a run around car till im off my ps and garage it when i find the right gtr.

C: buy a r33 gts non turbo and learn to drive manual properly and get used to the r33 so when i get the gtr i know the basics of the car.

D: the same as above but getting a r34 25gt non turbo and then later on selling it when im off my ps and buy the r33 gtr

E: buy a non turbo supra and then when im on my fulls either buy a gtr or a twiny supra

F: buy a twiny supra and garage it till im off my ps

G: use the money to get a loan for a unit( the best decision as eveyone tells me they did the same thing and spend there money on a car and regret not putting down a deposit for a house/unit) but the thing is im currently at tafe and im not to sure on what i exactly want to do and the problem would be getting stuck in a unseucre job untill i find out what i plan to do at tafe and the bank bending me over and taking everything.

so with that being said id like to hear what everyone here thinks i should do and also something else that you could recommend because most of you have been down this path and know a thing or two.

ya wouldnt want to buy 1 car then sell for another, its just a waste of money really.

get ya self a supra/gtr or what ever that you REALLY want, then garage it till you can drive it. sure you have to wait, but i guess you can work on it till its time.

haha im in the same position but my options are a r34 25GT or S15 Autech

:) and i'd aim to buy a gtr by the time im off my p's r34 gtr that is :ninja:

well it goes down to really where you live, cos i really wanted a r33 series 2 but theyres so many r33s in general in my area, and now i notice a lot of series 2 33s so thats why i moved up. but because your in tafe go for the cheapest option which is a r33 gts, or if your lucky a nice r32 25gts would be mint :P

or you could even go for a s14a, as it would be a lot cheaper on petrol than a skyline, but if you get the micra then petrol wouldnt matter.

so i guess your best option would be get the r33 and then get the gtr when your ready :)

first of all, a gtr isn't a v6, it's a straight 6. same goes for the supra

secondly, i'm pretty sure a s2000 will be out of your power/weight range, and if it isn't then the insurance on it for someone your age will be very high (i wouldn't be suprised if it was over $5000 for full comp)

thirdly, you would probably be better off going to a gts-t before going to the gtr. going from a NA to a gtr is going to be a very big jump in performance, and just having driven a NA isn't going to help that much as they are going to be totally different to drive. if you are going to be driving it sensibly without boosting it everywhere (not going to happen) then you could go from driving a suzuki mightyboy to a gtr without any issues, but since that (driving sensibly after buying a turbo car) only happens in make believe, going from any NA to something like a gtr could possibly end in tears. yes i'm sure people have done it without any incidents, but going off how many people have incidents in NA cars, let alone turbo cars, i wouldn't be making the jump in 1 hit.

the other thing to consider is that the gtr's aren't as cheap to own as their rb25 powered little brother. they are getting on a bit now, so reliability is becoming a bit more of an issue, and if something does happen to let go, it is going to be more expensive to fix. also for the cost of a gtr, you can easily get a gtst to be just as fast, if not faster.

great post above!

i was in the same boat as u when i first was getting my p's, i wanted booost, but new i couldnt drive it until i got my fulls, had 15grand saved, spent some buying a sedan civic vti for run around (good space, great GREAT reliability, bit of go for a 1.6, sounds great), banked the rest of the money gaining interest, 3 years on, im getting fulls in 2 months, made about 2 grand on interest, bout 2 sell that civic for bit more than i paid, budget is now over 15grand, so im buying boost very soon :)

not worth buying a car and garaging for at least 2 years (u said u were just about 2 get your p's) coz u will, without a doubt, take it for a spin, and its not worth getting pulled over for and losing your licence thus delaying the time before you can legally drive it.

f**k garaging a car for 2 years. The thing needs to be turned over and driven occasionally. Unless one comes up at a stellar price, its just not worth it sitting there gathering dust and depreciating.

If you've got your heart set on a turbo car when you get your full license, then just buy the cheapest rotbox you can find that'll last you until then. Don't bother modifying it or any other crap. Just something to commute in, and learn to drive.

If you can get the Camry sorted, keep that. If you want to learn manual, get something cheap. I recently bought an old Swift GTi and I love the little thing. It's such a fun car to drive. An EK VTiR would probably be quite fun too. Old SSS Pulsars have a decent engine and corner OK.

What about a 30 or a 31? They're still Skylines, they look tough, drive the right set of wheels, have a fair bit of space, and are reasonably priced.

thanks for the info guys. yeah knowing me there's no way the car would stay in the garage even if i wasnt the driver knowing my dad he would drive it but yeah it wouldn't be worth getting caught and delaying me from my fulls. i think im either going to buy a r33 gts or just get a reliable small run around i was thinking about the sss's but they are all thrashed. if i was to buy the gtr i will have about 5 grand set aside for any hidden surprises. right at the moment im thinking of either getting a na supra or r34 or r33. ill most likely spend the 15 out of the 25 and see how it goes.

buy a cheap, old school, fun box... like a ke70, ae86, datto, etc. etc.... something you can thrash, but stay within the speed limits... get to know the car, and how to drive.. how it behaves under different circumstances... get it out to track days whenever you can.. you have to crawl before you can walk.. and walk before you can run.. learn to control a $1000 car with 100hp before taking on a $30000 car with 300hp.

the gtr is a different kettle of fish to anything on the road in the way it behaves.. its not a constant 4wd like a wrx, evo, porsche, it doesnt respond to point and shoot driving style, its all about smoothness and flowing power delivery.. but they reward the driver who can find the limit and sit there.. push a gtr too hard and they will spit you into the closest hard thing around.. dont push it hard enough and you mayswell be driving a camry v6.

you have to have respect and passion for the car you drive.. it becomes a part of you... a GTR is more than just 3 letters and having $30000.

there are plenty of tidy n15 SSS out there. just don't bother looking at any that have a sports exhaust or big wheels. there have been plenty popping up with around 50,000kms on the clock that have been owned by elderly people as of late, which is very good for a 10 year old car (that isn't from japan where most people will use public transport even if they own a car, and where they odometers usually get 'altered' before people import them here).

old school celica's would be average as. they look pretty shit, and they will be tacky or worn on the interior side. mechanicals are fairly cheap to replace, and reliability is ok too.

do what i did.

had an SR20DE s13

its now a DET

oh and i never had restrictions when i got my car... just bought the first manual s13 in the showroom.

im thinking towards a r33 non turbo and then turboing it on my fulls. the money spent to turbo it wont be a problem as long as its still in good condition im happy to spend the extra money and knowing that the car is in tip top shape. if not then i guess ill be selling it for a gtst till i decide to upgrade to a gtr

If your heart is set on a car and you have the opportunity to get one, don't waste your youth waiting to feel like a kid again in a cool car. While the media hates it, there's really nothing better than having your dream car on your P's.

Make lemonade out of the lemons the government call P-plate laws. And with the house option, you'll have the rest of your life to buy a house, but how long will having a nice car be a number 1 priority? With age comes wisdom, and import cars aren't rational purchases.

Don't settle for second best

All the best, Happy hunting

im leaning towards a n15 pulsar off a elderly person so im going to take a look at a few and also some non turbo supra's and skylines and see what floats my boat in the end

if you do get a pulsar, first thing you should do (if the laws allow it for you) is a full exhaust. extractors make a big difference to the SSS (speaking from experience).

Agree>>By the time your old enough to have it your to old to enjoy it

Disagree>>Driving a hot car everyday is overated and more hassle than its worth..If you got the cash get your dream car..garage it , work on it Paint it put a nice stereo in whatever. Hit the ground running when your off your P's. but for daily duties drive any S*#tbox that works. Happy with assurance of having a beast hiding in the shed at home for when you really need it....

after looking for cars and what not my mum is looking to buy a new car and she went to check out some camrys today and she goes to them how much would they do it for her car as a trade in and they said to her she is better off giving it to me. so i think im going for the kill and buying a gtr while driving the merc. the car is in good condition and the engine is a strong engine as iv been told by a few mechanics its a black 180e merc limited edition. when she decides to get the camry ill be putting dark dark tints on the merc and buying some merc rims and it will be one nice car. so now its just a waiting game as to when the right gtr will pop up and when my mum decides to upgrade to the camry.
